After a year-long investigation, a top California exec has been arrested by the FBI for allegedly hacking into a competitor's website and stealing their customer data in an effort to ruin their business.
Chief financial officer of Choicelunch, Keith Wesley Cosbey, 40, was collared last month over claims that he illegally grabbed details from competitor The LunchMaster on what precisely youngsters across the San Francisco Bay Area like to eat and are allergic to.
According to the criminal complaint against him, filed in San Mateo County, Cosbey stole data on hundreds of students, and then sent it anonymously to the local government department that oversees the school lunch program in an apparent effort to undermine his competitor.
The approach backfired, though, when the California Department of Education contacted The LunchMaster about the data leak, and the company searched its access logs, it is claimed.
The LunchMaster then contacted the FBI, the San Francisco Chronicle reported today, which carried out an investigated before nabbing Cosbey last month.
The FBI has reportedly been unsuccessful this week in trying to crack the PIN on a phone belonging to the suspect in Sunday's mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.
FBI Deputy Director David Bowdich said if the suspect used a six- or eight-digit passcode, it could take months or years to break, The Hill reported Thursday.
The shooting left nine people dead and 27 injured.
The suspected shooter was killed by police at the scene.
The FBI has been able to unlock one of the alleged shooter's phones, a Samsung device, a Senate Democratic source told CBS News Thursday.
However, the suspect, Connor Betts, of Bellbrook, Ohio, had multiple phones.
Cybercriminals used ransomware to disable the technology systems at New York’s Monroe College, according to Inside Higher Ed.
They locked Monroe students, faculty and staff members out of the college’s Learning Management System, Blackboard and email system, and are now demanding about $2 million in Bitcoins.
Monroe officials are working with the FBI and local law enforcement officials to investigate the ransomware attack and resolve the incident.
Monroe officials have advised students to continue to attend classes and submit homework on paper and contact the college via their personal email accounts.
These are perpetuated by a small group of sophisticated criminals and are targeting the organizations by size and ability to pay.
