What’s New in Age Reversal Research

Time never stops, rather it keeps on passing constantly. As people move on between different stages of life, they see various changes in their bodies. They first transformed from a child into a young adult, and then evolve from being a parent to becoming an elderly grandparent. With that, medical researchers have constantly been searching for new techniques that can be used to reverse the effect of aging. As a result of this, life expectancy could be increased rapidly.

In this regard, several therapies are being researched, that may be useful in treating aging in humans. However, most of these provide nothing but moderate benefits to the lifespan of humans and their health. As of yet, no procedure is explored or tested that could reverse the age-related decline of health.

Though, techniques such as reprogramming have allowed scientists to reverse the effect of aging completely, at least on the level of cells for now. It has been found that GDF11, which is a protein that occurs naturally, may be capable of restoring aging hearts, brains, and muscles in mice.

According to the researchers at Harvard and other similar leading institutions, this protein could result in significant effects of age reversal. Previously, age reversal human trials involving GDF11 had not been carried out. Though, as of now, 20 volunteers have actively agreed to self-experiment with this protein to determine its effectiveness.

The results of these individuals are quite astounding. After using the protein for 4 to 14 months, it was noticed that among these individuals, arterial stiffness reduced by up to 37%. If this was indeed the work of this protein, then literally all aging humans will want to use the protein. After all, it seems to have great implications in the protection of vascular and other age-related heart disorders.

Considering the great in age reversal research, a big number of technologies have received major investments in the last decade. However, there has been little investment in reprogramming research. Back in 2013, a biotechnology company was founded by google referred to as Calico. The prime aim of this company is to increase the lifespan of humans and to develop tools for that.

Recently, aging therapies have shown improvements in age-related cognitive decline in experiments conducted on mice and other similar model systems. However, the effects are yet to be seen on the human level, on a larger scale. Though, when it comes to complete age reversal, reprogramming seems to have good implications. It involves resetting the old cells in the skin to new aging markers. While on the cellular level it gives spectacular results, it may never be used as a therapy. This is because the direct reprogramming of the cells in the body would be very extreme.

However, research is reprogramming of cells that are now being funded and is hence, slowly progressing. This technique may be used on a level of therapies in the future when scientists could find a workaround to its extremities. For now, reprogramming is a promising technique but it is in its infancy.
