Is Natural Gas Good for Environment?

The rising environmental concerns have made people more concerned about preventing any kind of detrimental effects on it. This is ensured through the adoption of sustainable practices. One such practice is replacing the polluting exhaustible natural resources with the non-polluting natural gas as an efficient energy resource. This has led to the development of Tamar field, in the Levant Basin. It is formed in the same way as coal and oil from the fossils embedded deep in the earth's surface through millions of years of heat and pressure. The gas released from the decaying matter was confined in the porous rock material in the earth's surface which was then covered with other harder rocks.

Methane, which is the lightest hydrocarbon is the main constituent of natural gas and is colorless and odorless in nature. Once this is burnt, a huge amount of energy is released, which makes it suitable for domestic purposes like cooking as well as on a massive scale to generate electricity. The reason behind its popularity is that it is a cleaner alternative for energy compared to other fuels like coal and oil which produce harmful pollutants on burning. Though natural gas has methane which is also a greenhouse gas, the degree of harm caused by it is much less compared to other fuels. To be precise is because it produces only 1/10th air pollutants.

The carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxides are pollutants that contribute to global warming and greenhouse effects. This results in numerous harmful outcomes, one of which is the melting of polar ice caps, which will cause the coastal areas to get inundated. Besides this, such pollutant is extremely harmful to humans as well as other living creatures. To reduce this, the focus is on using cleaner alternatives such as natural gas and other renewable energy resources such as solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, etc.

Another best part about natural gas is that when the liquified natural gas or LNG is used, storing and ship it becomes economical as this doesn't need pipelines. In the process of its liquefaction, other compounds except methane are removed and its final weight is half that of the water. It occupies half the space occupied by natural gas of equivalent amount. The liquid form can be easily converted to gaseous form by warming it.

In power stations that are powered by natural gas, we can see that less time is needed for starting and stopping it, compared to that of a coal-fired plant. Owing to the flexibility of this fuel, it is used with renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Besides this, countries such as Japan have shut down the nuclear reactors after the Fukushima disaster and resorted to LNG as the energy source. In certain cases, the cost of natural gas production is lower than that of coal as per IEA which states investment of $1100 per kW is needed the most efficient gas-fired plant but coal-fired plant requires $3700.
