Are white led grow lights good for growing? Full Guide for Cannabis Growers

For people who love to grow indoor plants, there are always continuous debates on the best grow light that gets the best results for growth. One of the most recent debates is the effect of white LED lights on indoor plant growth.

While most indoor growers are familiar with the benefits of using purple growing lights, white LED lights are a newer consideration.

Almost all growers have previously considered white light to have little or no value for plant growth. However, this is not actually true with white LED Lights, as seen in the studies cited earlier.

The white light spectrum includes a few colors currently included in all LED grow lights, like blue and red. But it also comprises of a few wavelengths not included in significant intensity in most LED grow lights today.

While there are a number of colors of lights that come into effect when it comes to growing a cannabis plant, white lights are the ones that matter a lot. A white-light spectrum consists of six lights at different wavelengths. These lights are of violet, blue, green, yellow, orange and red colors. Each of these lights is a part of the white-light spectrum at different wavelengths.

In this, violet light is usually present at 380-450nm, blue light at 450-495nm, green light at 495-570nm, yellow light at 570-590nm, orange light at 590-620nm and finally red light at 620 to 750nm. While most spectrum of lights will have all of these colors but the intensity of the wavelength of the lights will be different.

What is a Color Spectrum?

Plants are genetically programmed to grow using sun light, which we consider to be white light, or yellowish-white light. This light looks white because it contains all of the colors of a rainbow, and when these colors are all mixed together they look white.

A color spectrum is a graphical display of each of the colors in the light.

Scientists use wavelength numbers to refer to the colors instead of color names, which is a much more accurate way to measure the color. So a red might have a wavelength of 630 or 660. Both of these look red to us, but they are actually different colors.

Grow lights for weed that use florescent bulbs, refer to the color of the bulb as cool white (has more blue), or warm white (has more red). That was useful for florescent lights, but such designations do not work well for LED lights. When it comes to LED it is more accurate to talk in terms of wavelengths and to display the actual color spectrum.

LED, or Light-Emitting Diode, grow lights have increased in popularity over the years. Advancements in technology have changed the grow game. In the past, HPS lights were essentially the only option. But today you will find LED lights at some of the largest commercial cannabis grows. In comparison to HPS grow lights, LED grow lights are incredibly energy efficient. High quality LED grow lights can produce equivalent yields to HPS grow lights using significantly less energy. Therefore, many cannabis growers consider LED lights to be an environmentally friendlier option for indoor cultivation. They also happen to be cost-efficient. Although LED grow lights tend to have higher upfront costs than HPS lights, they offer long-term savings. The extended life span of LED lights means you will not be constantly shoveling your money into replacements.
