Vitamin C For Guinea Pigs

Vitamin C is essential to your pet guinea pig.  These animals are not able to make their own of this vitamin, like humans.  If there is not enough of this vitamin in your pet’s diet, it can come down with scurvy.  The required vitamin C levels vary with each source reference that you check, but most pet guinea pigs will likely require around ten to thirty milligrams per day.  More might be needed if your guinea pig is il, young, nursing, or pregnant.

If you offer your guinea pig good vegetable selections that are laden with vitamin C coupled with fresh pellets specifically for guinea pigs, then you are already likely meeting your pet’s vitamin C needs.

Most pellets for guinea pigs already have added vitamin C, however, it is unfortunate that this vitamin is particularly unstable.  It degrades over time, so keep the pellets stored in a dark and cool place to help in preserving their vitamin C content.  There are also options for pellets that have a more stable vitamin C form.

The ideal way of offering vitamin C supplements to your pet is to use tablets of the vitamin.
