Earlier, AT&T didn’t allow its users to go for third-party routers and connect for high-speed Internet. But, the world’s largest telecommunications company has amended its terms of use and allows its customers to use their router with AT&T Fiber. Why not check this guide and learn how to use your own router with AT&T Fiber for the ultimate speed at a reasonable price?

With more and more people taking up WFH projects in this pandemic, many Internet companies are locking horns to provide the best service. As an old AT&T Fiber customer, the Company has offered its router. If that is the case, why would you go for your router? Let’s clear this first!

Why Should You Get Your Own Router When AT&T Fiber Has Already Installed Its Router at Your Home?

Before setting your new router and access the high-speed AT&T Fiber Internet service, you must learn why you should do it when the Company has its own router installed at your home. Sometimes the world load is immense and you would want to get rid of it as quickly as possible. For this, you would require high speed. Maybe, you would require parental controls and tri-band, which AT&T’s router wouldn’t provide.

Another valid reason could be – you have a router already installed at your place and it is really paying off well. You wouldn’t want to change or replace it for any reason. When the AT&T technical arrives at your place to install the Fiber Internet, you may opt for using your own.

Buying your own router is a great way to save money (as you can control your budget) and have the desired features. If you think setting up your device would be a tad tiring, we have brought you the steps below.

Setting up Your Own Router with AT&T – Step-by-Step Guide

Here’s a sneak peek into the complete setup process of your own router with AT&T Fiber.

  • Choose a Compatible Router: First of all, you must get hold of a router that supports or compatible with your current Internet plan from AT&T Fiber. You may seek professional help who can guide you in this.
  • Find Gateway Login Information: You have selected your router and made sure it would work fine with the AT&T plan. Great! The next thing that you should do is to locate your gateway login information. The gateway login credentials must be provided by AT&T when you signed up. The login information will help you make changes in the settings so that you configure your router in a hassle-free manner.
  • Change Settings to 172.16.0.0: Locate the settings tab and go to LAN. You will then select DHCP and change the range to 172.16.0.0.
  • Plugging New Router: The next step involves plugging in your new router to connect it to AT&T Fiber and a power outlet. Next, unplug the network cable and plug it back in.
  • Navigate to Firewall from Settings: After unplugging and plugging the network cable, you will need to go back to the gateway settings. From here, navigate to the firewall and choose pinhole, applications, and DMZ. You will be prompted to select your router and then choose “Allow all applications (DMZ plus mode)”.
  • Log into Router Configuration Page: After selecting the new router, you need to log into the configuration page.
  • Check IP Address to Ensure Correct Configuration: You will only be assured the configuration is successful if the IP address is correct, i.e. it should start with 192. If it starts with 172, the router isn’t configured properly.

Make sure that you have already disabled your AT&T router. It would be nice if you haven’t used it at all. You wouldn’t want to mess things up, right.
