Facebook changed its name to meta ! But Why ?

Facebook since its launch has acquiring many features through time, but when the CEO Mark Zuckerberg decided to do a full name change of the company to focus more on “metaverse” it caused a lot of concern in both users and employees.

What is the meaning of meta?

Meta is a prefix in modern English that can refer to a variety of different connotations. In popular culture, “meta” often has the meaning of self-referential or self-reflexive. Metadata is additional information that describes other pieces of data.

We can see that even though they said it’s not going to affect their social media platform users, the truth behind the scenes is not as rosy as it seems.

What is the metaverse?

The term “metaverse” is used to describe the digital environment that applies to a virtual reality world with its own 3D objects, users and content. Metaverse is a combination of meta- (“beyond”) and the word “universe.”

In these years Facebook has been left with no choice but to focus on metaverse, due to the rapid increase of the number of users. Even though it’s not easy to change an existing name, Mark Zuckerberg decided to focus on this issue.

Why did mark Zuckerberg change the facebook name?

Mark Zuckerberg always said that Facebook is about bringing people closer together through sharing experiences.

But actually, Facebook since its launch had been gaining profits and users and attracting more and more advertisers.

This is because the platform was not only for sharing experiences but also gathered a lot of information about users personal life.

Nowadays, Facebook’s main business is based on advertising. Mark Zuckerberg said that advertising is the lifeblood of the platform . According to Pew Research Center survey , Even though Facebook can be an effective way to advertise products like clothing, cosmetics advertisement has become the most significant source of advertisement revenue in 2015.

Mark Zuckerberg said that people who joined Facebook were no longer unique individuals but instead were ” walking billboards ” that could be used by advertisers to promote their products.

Mark Zuckerberg said, ” Facebook is an advertising company “.

It is claimed that he wanted to focus on connection instead of interference. This change is the main reason for the name change.

Agreed that Mark Zuckerberg is obsessed with making money, but why did he choose to make this change now?

The decision came after the release of the document ” Proposed new corporate structure ” , which asked Facebook employees to think about what would happen if they fail to meet their growth targets. As a result of changes outlined in this document, Mark Zuckerberg decided to make his company into a platform where advertisers can connect directly with users, and not just keep track of users’ activities on Facebook.
