What is Blow Off Valve?

If you are into car racing, then you probably heard the thing called blow off valve. Also called as dump valve or compressor bypass valve or CBV, this valve is a pressure release system found in most turbocharged engines.

The main purpose of this valve is to relieve the turbocharger of its load when the throttle is completely closed.

Other car experts call this valve as diverter valve due to its design. It helps release the pressure in the intake system of a turbocharged engine when the throttle is closed or lifted.

This air pressure coming from the turbo is re-circulated back into the non-pressurized end of the intake, back to the turbo or exits the system outside the engine.

The blow off valve is also called as "hooter valve" due to its design of releasing the pressurized air to atmosphere instead of recirculating it inside the air intake system.

Is there any advantage or benefits of having a blow off valve? First, it helps prevent compressor surge, which is a common thing in a turbocharged engine.

So that is what and how blow off valve works. But do diesel engines need blow off valve? Read my blod post here to learn more about this particular issue.
