New Passenger Information Display Systems Installed at 300 Bus Stops in Singapore

Singapore’s public buses forma significant part of public transport in the country, with over 4.0 million rides taken per day on average as of 2018. Currently, the buses are run by SMRT Buses, SBS Transit, Tower Transit, and Go-Ahead Singapore. After mass rapid transit, public buses offer affordable and convenient transport to people all around the island. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and public bus operators continuously work hard to improve the bus infrastructure. Recently, LTA announced new Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) panels will be installed at 310 bus stops from September 2021 to September 2023.

Features of the New PIDS Panels

The new PIDS panels come with improved design, vibrant graphics and bigger fonts. Commuters at most bus stops will now have more information about their trips via new display systems. With enhanced display systems, passengers can better plan their journey. Here are the most important features of the new Passenger Information Display Systems:

  1. Incoming Buses — The new systems will display information on when the next five buses are arriving.
  2. Quickest Way To — Commuters will enjoy this feature as they can view information about which bus service to take to their choice of destinations in nearby locations in the shortest time possible
  3. Bus Arrivals by Service — Commuters can view the arrival time of the next two buses of each service. The panels will also display destinations and points of interest along their travel route, including MRT stations and hospitals.
  4. Messages – The new panels will display travel advisories such as rail disruptions, planned maintenance works on the MRT network, and information on changes to bus services.

As a starting point, new PIDS panels have already been installed at bus stops along Bedok Reservoir Road, Jalan Eunos, Paya Lebar Road, Serangoon Road and Sims Avenue.

Apart from the new PIDS systems, public bus operators are working with LTA to deploy and implement sustainability options. SMRT Buses deployed three-door buses to allow passengers to enter and exit buses quicker. This will help the vehicle’s dwell time and reduce carbon emission levels at bus stops. SMRT has installed solar panelsat bus interchanges such as Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange to power the electronic information display systems. The Yishun Integrated Transport Hub (YITH) has been designed to be fully barrier-free with facilities that can cater to the elderly, handicapped and families with young children.

Commenting on the new technology being introduced in Singapore’s public transportation, Seah Moon Ming, SMRT Chairman, said, “Moving forward, we will innovate and develop new capabilities to grow the Company. We will continue to invest in People and Technology. Kaizen and continuous improvement efforts will also be deepened at the individual, system, and company levels.

Conclusion

The new PIDS systems have already been installed at five bus stops. Installations (will be) carried out at more bus stops from November 2021. By the end of September 2023, more than 300 bus stops will have the new Passenger Information Display Systems. With more information about their bus arrivals, travel route, and other travel advisories, commuters will have improved experienced travelling via public buses.
