Five Effective Tips for Keeping Furnace Room Safe

Basement is typically the most neglected and underappreciated room in our homes. But, it is also the place that houses the furnace and other important systems. So, even if the space, your basement, stay out of your sight for most days of the year, it doesn’t mean you should neglect it forever, especially when it has a furnace installed.

This is because neglecting the space can result in a malfunction of the furnace, therefore posing a serious threat to everyone’s safety in the house.

So, to help you, we are drafting this article with tips that will help you keep the furnace room in tip-top condition.

1- Make space and ventilate

Furnaces are typically powered by fuels like oil, propane, natural gas or electricity. That is why it is important to keep the space empty and ventilated.

Keep the area surrounding the furnace free from debris and other equipment. Also, get rid of any boxes or other things blocking the air intakes or vents. Avoid leaning anything against the furnace-like used or old filter parts, etc.

2- Store elsewhere

If you have a cat, avoid keeping the litter near the furnace. The ammonia fumes from the litter can cause corrosion on the furnace heat exchanger. Even the odour can end up circulating inside the house.

Avoid storing laundry products near the furnace. If they are stored in the furnace room, ensure the products are stored in airtight containers.

3- Safety first

Avoid keeping any type of combustibles such as paint, gasoline and paint thinners in the furnace room or near the furnace.

If possible, vacuum and clean the space around the furnace and water heater to avoid any dust buildup over time.

Also, schedule regular maintenance to ensure everything is functioning in the right order.

4- Lighting matters

It is best to install proper light in the furnace room. This is because walking around in a space installed with burnt light bulbs and low light bulbs can prove challenging, especially if you want to do an emergency check.

Replace the broken bulbs and, if possible, keep an extra light source in the room.

5- Maintenance is key

When it comes to the furnace, it is always best to be safe than sorry. Or else get ready to spend on new furnace sales in Ottawa.

So, make sure to call the experts for regular maintenance at least once or twice a year. Replace the furnace filter as suggested by the manufacturer.

Inspect for rust spots around or on the furnace to get it treated beforehand. Similarly, take care of unusual noises and call experts as soon as you can.

To be concluded

Considering these five tips is enough to ensure your furnace room stays safe.
