Indeed, it is we who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things we have accounted for in a clear register.” (Qur’an, 36:12)

What is Sadaqah Jariyah?

Sadaqah is a form of charity in Islam that is completely voluntary for the one giving it. Giving charity in this way is highly rewardable, and there are no rules for the giver in terms of when it should be given, where, how much, or to whom.

Sadaqah Jariyah is a special type of voluntary charity: It is ongoing. The recipient will benefit from the charity continually, and it is believed that this means that the giver will be receiving good deeds for a long time – even after their death. For example, giving somebody some food could be considered an act of Sadaqah, as it is helping to alleviate hunger for those in need. The provision of food itself tends to help the recipient, once. Giving water, through establishing a water hand pump or well, however, is an act of Sadaqah Jariyah. A water well allows people to obtain water whenever they wish, and the longevity of the intervention means that it will benefit people for generations to come. In turn, the donation to water projects will continue benefiting the giver for years to come, even long after they have passed away. For this reason, many Muslims strive to give Sadaqah Jariyah, so that they may reap as many rewards as possible and seek closeness to Allah (swt).

Many people also choose to give Sadaqah Jariyah on behalf of their deceased loved ones in order for the ongoing rewards to benefit the deceased in their Hereafter.

Giving Sadaqah without giving money

While one of the best ways to give Sadaqah is to make a monetary charitable donation to the poor, Islam, and the sunnah, teaches us about actions that are favoured by Allah (swt) and are also considered Sadaqah. They are rewarded, just as a Sadaqah donation is.

  1. Every step you take towards prayer
  2. Quenching someone’s thirst
  3. Enjoining good on others
  4. Spending on your family
  5. Speaking with honesty
  6. Smiling
  7. Sharing your knowledge
  8. Dhikr of Allah
  9. Making duaa for someone
  10. Visiting the sick

These actions are small ways you can help others, strengthen your own faith and improve your relationship with Allah (swt). These actions help you support others and also reap rewards.Best ways of performing Sadaqah

Giving Water

The Prophet Muhammad said: “The best charity is giving water to drink.”

With Muslim Charity, you can build a water handpump in Asia or Africa for just £150 and gain blessings for decades to come. With every drop of clean water drank, blessings will come your way, Insha’Allah.

When you build a water handpump, a family in need receives clean and safe water close to their home. This means they have water that is free from disease and contamination for drinking, cleaning, washing and cooking.

Providing clean water stops people from becoming fatally sick from dirty water, women and children no longer have to make lengthy and dangerous journeys to collect water, children are able to go to school, women can work and families spend more time together. The impact of clean water will continue for generations ahead Insha’Allah, giving you ongoing rewards from now and long after you have passed away.

Saving babies and their mothers

Pregnant women and new-born babies are among the most vulnerable members of our society. Millions of people living in poverty do not have access to good healthcare to ensure safe deliveries of new-born babies. This often means women give birth in unsafe, unsanitary conditions at home, putting their lives and that of their baby at risk. It doesn’t have to be this way. For just £150, you can provide a safe delivery of a baby at a hospital with qualified doctor.

In Pakistan, Bangladesh and Somalia, hundreds of women lose their lives during childbirth every single day. Your £150 donation will help put a stop to this, and in saving a life, you will receive rewards for years to come Insha’Allah.

“And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” [5:32]
