The application of Air Conditioning

The same operating principles and components apply to air conditioners and refrigerators. Refrigerators use energy (typically electricity) to transport heat from the cool interior of the refrigerator to the relatively warm surroundings of your home; similarly, an air conditioner uses energy to transport heat from the interior of your home to the relatively warm outside environment.

An air conditioner's evaporator, or cold interior coil, cools your home. The condenser, which is a hot outside coil, releases the accumulated heat outside. The evaporator and condenser coils are serpentine tubing surrounded by aluminium fins. For this purpose, copper tubing is commonly used.

A compressor transports a heat transfer fluid between the evaporator and the condenser (or refrigerant). The pump forces the refrigerant through the tubing and fins of the coils.

In the indoor evaporator coil, the liquid refrigerant evaporates, removing heat from the air and cooling your home. The heated refrigerant gas is pumped outside into the condenser, where it cools and condenses, releasing heat to the outside air passing through the condenser's metal tubing and fins.

Throughout the second half of the twentieth century, nearly all air conditioners used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as a refrigerant. Nonetheless, because these chemicals are harmful to the Earth's ozone layer, CFC production in the United States was phased out in 1995. Almost all air conditioning systems now use halogenated chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) as refrigerants. The most recent HCFC, HCFC-22 (also known as R-22), was phased out beginning in 2010 and will be completely phased out by 2020. HCFC-22, on the other hand, is expected to be available for many years as obsolete systems are decommissioned and repurposed. As these refrigerants are phased out, it is expected that ozone-safe hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs) and other refrigerants, such as ammonia, will take their place.

Air conditioner problems are fairly common.
