Breaking the Patent Wall of Qualcomm Chips, Apple Self-Developed Chips will be Mass Produced

Following the A series as well as the M series, the Apple own 5G chip will have more space to think about while the chips market appears to be in the process of new innovation.

Apple's aim of getting rid of Qualcomm could soon be realized. Apple is planning to utilize the 4nm process developed by TSMC to make the company's personal iPhone 5G baseband processor, which will be manufactured in mass quantities by 2023, as per Nikkei News. Qualcomm has an almost monopoly over Apple's baseband chip business recently stated that its part of the purchases to manufacture iPhone baseband chips could decrease to 20 percent by 2023.

It is known that the 4nm process of TSMC has not been used in a commercial product. At the moment Apple's 5G baseband chip is being developed and tested using the 5nm process of TSMC, and Apple is working on millimeter-wave and radio frequency components to enhance the modem. Apple is also working on power management chips specifically designed for the modem, as per people who are familiar with the issue.

According to reports, as well as Apple's development of 5G chips, The TSMC process of 4nm can also assist Apple to develop A-series chip designs for the next iPhone.

Self-development of chips is a crucial step for Apple to enhance its capabilities for hardware integration. Since the year 2019's Qualcomm patent trial, Apple seems to be continuously trying to break free the Qualcomm monopoly.

In July, Apple bought most of Intel's smartphone modems business for $1 billion, which demonstrates its commitment to developing its baseband. In the press conference of this year the two brand new processors, M1 Pro and M1 Max have increased the power and performance by utilizing the M1 chip that was released in 2020. Apple's goal is to achieve autonomy of the chip following "getting out from Intel" and eliminating Qualcomm.

What's the reason that made Apple continue to push more on the path of self-research in chip technology? The chip's architecture is both reliable performance and low-cost requirements. This is the main reason that led Apple to go with self-development for its chips.

In 2015, following the launch of a completely revamped The MacBook, the brand new MacBook Designer Jony I've completely redesigned the MacBook's products, from keyboards, batteries and motherboards, to touchpads, screens antennas as well as interfaces as a way to completely change laptops' design and establish the future design of the MacBook.

But Intel's chip, which has been the main reason for Apple's performance has failed to hold its own. In the five years following its launch, the new MacBook was taken off Apple's line of products due to the low reviews from users because of its lack of heat dissipation as well as performance. In a time when the energy consumption of a device is more important than ever before, Intel, which squeezes toothpaste, is unable to satisfy Apple's requirements for high-performance, and, with the growth of companies like TSMC or Samsung Electronics, it is increasing its technological distance from Intel. Apple could have more options to create its chips.

In addition, Apple doesn't want to be stuck. Following the resolution in the Apple Qualcomm lawsuit in the year 2019, Qualcomm still dominates Apple's chip architecture. Apple is still using Qualcomm's Snapdragon 5G baseband chip on the new iPhone 13 series. Making its chips will allow Apple greater control over the integration of its hardware and software functions, and more control over the costs of its components.

At the time of Apple-Intel binding ends, Qualcomm looks set to go out of business with Apple, or more precisely, Apple will choose to "abandon" Qualcomm. It is likely that following The A-Series and the M Series chips are released, Apple's 5G chips will be able to expand their creativity while the chips market appears to be at the cusp of something completely new.
