Best PS4 Exclusives That You Need to play

Death Stranding (also on PC)

For those who are willing to put in the time, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding certainly shares some of the same elements with the previous Metal Gear games — but there are few that can be accurately compared. Sam Porter Bridges works as a delivery person for a group trying to reconnect America after an apocalyptic event.

Kojima’s bizarre story, which takes place throughout multiple cutscenes and gameplay dialogue, involves the following elements:

Another dimension.

Babies capable of detecting dark creatures.

Other things we don’t understand.

Death Stranding is also packed with an absolute all-star cast, including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo Del Toro, and Léa Seydoux.

God of War

With God of War 2018, Sony Santa Monica transformed God of War from a dated action series on its last legs into one of the most acclaimed games of all time. The reboot did not remove any of the story threads from the previous games. Even so, Kratos’ presence in Norse mythology instead of rehashing Greek monsters retained an element of freshness while keeping familiarity. It looks more impressive than its predecessors and has an atmospheric and living atmosphere thanks to Atreus, Kratos’ son. God of War’s open-ended exploration makes it one of the most impressive-looking games on the system.

It’s impossible to discuss God of War without mentioning how brilliant the combat is. You can summon the Leviathan Axe back into your hand following a throw, and the moves you can use once you’ve mastered the skill tree only add to the variety and excitement of your battles. It is indeed one of the most impressive games released on PS4 to date, not to mention the entire game is a continuous camera shot.

Bloodborne

Dark Souls was at its height of popularity when Sony and FromSoftware partnered to offer the PlayStation 4 its exclusive take on the series. As a faster and more aggressive Souls game, Bloodborne relies on quick movement and constant attacks to defeat the many terrifying enemies in Yharnam. However, even though the game only really supports one play style, it’s balanced so well, and the bosses are so entertaining and well-designed that you won’t notice the lack of variety.

To help, the world of Yharnam is the most creative and beautiful that FromSoftware has ever created, blending Victorian-era architecture and classic enemies with Lovecraft-inspired monsters that are nothing short of terrifying. The fear of what lies around the next corner keeps you on the edge of your seat even when you win a battle. It’s been a while since we’ve heard from fans; we’re hoping for an update sooner than later.

Nioh (also on PC)

Need more monster-killing, Souls-like action after completing Bloodborne? Nioh from Team Ninja might seem like a simple imitation at first glance. Still, it provides many customization options, optional abilities, and inventive monsters to fight with FromSoftware’s framework. It blends feudal Japan with mythological Yokai monsters that test you on every skill you’ve learned, and stars an outsider named William.

As brutal as Nioh can be at times, it feels fair to you as you learn to counter the enemy’s telegraphed moves. When you gain experience in combat, you’re able to pull off some incredible feats, and even the biggest and meanest monsters can’t stand a chance against your sword. Also worth doing is Nioh 2, its sequel.

Alienation

On the PlayStation 4, there are surprisingly few Diablo-like, loot-filled action games, but Housemarque’s Alienation is one of the best. Alien-invasion games have you battling your way through urban and rural environments filled with dangerous enemies, but you have high-powered weapons and armor suits to help you stop them.

Although Alienation is brutally difficult, especially near the end, and all but requires a cooperative partner to enjoy properly, it scratches the same loot itch as Diablo III or Path of Exile, and its science-fiction setting is an enjoyable change from their fantasy settings.

Knack 2

Ignore the jokes and memes you’ve heard about the original Knack for a moment, and you’ll see that Knack 2 is a genuinely well-designed family-friendly action game. Building on the barebones gameplay from the original, the sequel allows you to temporarily shrink the titular hero to make it through a puzzle, only to grow massively in size when it’s time to beat up an adamant enemy.

Though the story isn’t on par with Pixar, Knack 2’s humor is written well enough to please both children and their parents, and its challenge is balanced enough to keep older kids playing for hours on end without their younger siblings losing interest. Knack is most certainly back, and he’s a whole lot better.

Ratchet & Clank

Ratchet & Clank: Reloaded is a new version of the PlayStation 2 original game, but it was remade from the ground up by Insomniac. The humor, characters, and story threads you remember from over a decade ago are all still present, but the platforming and third-person shooting controls feel entirely modern. It’s a perfect choice for introducing kids to games you played back in the day, but even those utterly new to the series will have a blast with it.

I believe that Ratchet & Clank is one of the more underappreciated games because of its brevity. There are plenty of side activities to do and collectibles to find, but if you want to stick to the critical path and make it to the end of the story, you can easily do so on the weekend.
