Urinary incontinence is quite common in people of all ages, especially those above the age of 50. However, not many people speak about it out loud, not even to the healthcare provider, due to the mere reason of feeling embarrassed.

However, it is important to note that issues with bladder leakage will only worsen if the treatment for urinary incontinence is not taken on time. Plus, discussing the issue with a healthcare expert will only help you gain more knowledge on the topic and help you lead a healthy life.

Another thing worth noting is that there are various causes of urinary incontinence, but that doesn’t mean you cannot improve or cure the problem. Below mentioned are some strategies that can help in regaining the control.

1- Look what you eat

While nutrient and fibre-rich food can help you lead a happy life, there are certain foods that can do just the opposite, especially when you experience urinary incontinence.

Try avoiding certain foods, ingredients and drinks like –

  • Artificial sweetener
  • Chocolate
  • Carbohydrate drinks
  • Spicy food
  • Honey
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Corn syrup

2- Get rid of extra pounds

Obesity is also directly linked with urinary incontinence. It is best to spend some time performing exercises that impact your body weight. Losing weight can significantly lower the episodes of bladder leakage.

3- Train your bladder

There are a few exercises that you can perform to keep your bladder under control, such as:

  • Kegel exercise – Squeezing and releasing certain muscles in the pelvis can help in strengthening them. Practising Kegel exercise on a regular basis can eventually make you become more leakproof.
  • The knack – Perform the normal Kegel exercise while you cough or sneeze or while doing a specific activity that triggers a leak.

Work with a physical therapist to identify how to perform such activities properly and regularly.

4- Seek medical assistance

Based on the type of incontinence you are suffering from; the doctor may recommend one of the following treatments for urinary incontinence:

  • Medications help the bladder hold more, reducing urgency and enhancing your ability to empty the bladder properly.
  • Botox injection on the lining of the bladder blocks the chemical release that encourages muscle contractions.
  • A thick substance is injected into the urethra to help it hold the urine.
  • Surgery to insert a mesh strip against the urethra to prevent leaks.

Following the above-mentioned strategies along with conventional medical treatment can help you regain control over your bladder in no time.
