PATCHOULI OIL | USES AND BENEFITS

Patchouli Essential Oil is extracted from the leaves of the highly valuable Patchouli plant and is also referred to as "the aroma of the sixties." The plant is related to Lavender, Mint, and Sage, among other well-known aromatic plants. Patchouli is native to tropical places like Brazil and Hawaii, as well as Asian nations like China, India, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where it is widely farmed. It was widely used in folk medicine in Asian countries to promote healthy hair, as well as soothe dryness and improve the appearance of acne prone skin. Patchouli Oil is thought to be named after the Hindi word "pacholi," which means "to fragrance."

Patchouli Oil Varieties

Patchouli is divided into three species:

  1. Pogostemon Cablin
  2. Pogostemon Heyneanus
  3. Pogostemon Hortensis

The Cablin species is the most common and is grown for its essential oil because of its benefits to improve our health and wellbeing, which make it preferable to other Patchouli oil varieties.

Patchouli Essential Oil comes in two varieties: light and dark. However their fragrance is the same.

Although they are both derived from the same species, Pogosteman cablin, the vessels in which they are distilled dictate their tones; f

➔       If the patchouli oil is distilled in a stainless-steel vat, the viscosity is thin and the colour is deep amber, or light.

➔       When the patchouli oil is distilled in a cast-iron vat, it has a thick viscosity and is a dark brown colour.

Cultivation of Patchouli Oil

Patchouli thrives in tropical countries' hot, humid climates, and can be seen growing alongside rice paddies or in open fields. Coconut, Pine, Rubber, and Peanut trees are all popular places to find it growing.

Patchouli oil can be cultivated in two ways:

●      Planting cuttings from the mother plant after they have been planted in water is the most popular method of cultivating Patchouli oil.

●      These plants can also be propagated by harvesting the seeds produced by the plant's small, light pink, aromatic flowers, which bloom in late Autumn.

Patchouli grows best on soft, loosely packed soil that is rich in nutrients and organic materials, with the ideal pH level ranging between 6 and 7. Patchouli has the potential to grow to a height of 2 to 3 feet in this optimal setting. Which can produce a good amount of Patchouli oil.

Extracting Patchouli oil

Let’s take a look at the methods for extracting patchouli oil.

●      Patchouli is ready to harvest when it has reached maturity, which takes about 6-7 months and the leaves can be picked multiple times throughout the year.

●      They are collected manually, packed together, and dried in the shade to a degree.

●      They're then left to ferment for a few days before being shipped to the distillery.

●      Young Patchouli leaves from the Pogosteman cablin species are steam distilled.

●      The patchouli essential oils with the strongest aroma are thought to come from the top 3 to 4 pairs of Patchouli plant leaves.

●      Patchouli Oil is thick and can range in hue from pale yellow to dark amber or brown.

●      Steam distilling Patchouli leaves while they are still fresh and closer to their harvesting place, rather than when they are dried, is said to produce the freshest, finest quality patchouli oil.
