The global Feed Yeast Market size is estimated at USD 1.8 billion in 2020 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% to reach USD 2.3 billion by 2025. The market has a promising growth potential due to several factors, including the increasing awareness of yeast-based animal feed products and strict government regulations regarding animal health.

The addition of live microbes as a nutritional additive to animal feed has been an age-old concept, and with the increasing awareness of eubiotics for animal nutrition, the market for microbes and their derivatives has been gaining significant attention among livestock growers across the globe. According to the FAO, “yeast is a unicellular fungus which reproduces asexually by budding or division,” and the application of these yeasts has been very common in the food industry. However, with the ban on the application of antibiotics in feed across the European Union countries, the application of yeast in animal nutrition had started gaining pace in the last 10 years.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been the most widely adopted yeast for all applications, including feed. Majority of the key players such as Associated British Foods plc. (UK), Cargill (US), and Lesaffre (France) have been providing feed yeast with Saccharomyces formulation. According to FAO, apart from Saccharomyces spp., Candida spp. (a part of which was formerly known as Torula) has been gaining importance in North America as a probiotic yeast for feed application. Of the probiotic strains registered with FAO in 2017 for animal nutrition, only Saccharomyces and Candida are approved for probiotic application in the feed industry.

Poultry and swine were the livestock for which major quantities of yeast were produced, occupying over 60% of the global feed production. However, the feed yeast consumption depends on the application rate of yeast on the feed consumed. According to the products offered by major companies, the application rate of yeast in ruminant feed is much higher in comparison to swine and is the least for poultry. Hence, though feed production for poultry is high, the market for feed yeast is dominated by the ruminants’ segment, in terms of volume.

The Asia Pacific accounted for the largest share of the feed yeast market in 2019, owing to the high production of brewer’s and probiotic yeast in countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea. Expansion of production facilities for feed yeast in China and India and the growing awareness among livestock growers about the benefits of feed yeast are expected to provide scope for market expansion in the Asia Pacific. Government policies adopted by European countries toward a ban on the usage of antibiotics in animal feed have also been a major factor contributing to the growth of this market in the region. Moreover, ongoing R&D activities for better and efficient application of yeast in animal and pet food nutrition could also render scope for market growth.
