Malaysian firm develops chicken feeder for domestic distribution

FGV Integrated Farming Sdn Bhd (FGVIF) has developed a locally produced chicken feeder for domestic distribution, beginning from Muar, Johor state and Perak state, as the country aims to reduce its dependence on imported poultry feed, Bernama reported.

The chicken feed, branded as Alma, is a multi-agency effort, led by FGV Holdings Bhd (FGV) in cooperation with the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda), Felda Capital Cooperative (KPF) and Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas).

In order to make sure that Alma products are easily accessible in the markets in the state as well as the rest of the country, FGV group CEO Nazrul Izam Mansor said that the distribution network was being expanded throughout Perak.

Before extending the marketing with promotional programmes targeted at Felda and FGV settlers, and then to consumers outside, he said for the Perak market, the first step is to use the existing distribution network in the state.

Nazrul Izam said that the initial distribution of the Alma kampung chicken feed would concentrate on areas that were close to the company’s processing plant in Muar, Johor, before distribution began in Perak and then other states.

In addition to always making sure that the supply from the factory was enough to cover the demand for the domestic and export markets, he said that his team had also prepared a delivery service at affordable prices, especially for clients outside the Klang Valley.

In an effort to support the goals of national food security and national agrofood policy, FGVIF first introduced the Alma kampung chicken feed on August 10.

The leftovers from the nearby rice and padi mills are used to make the kampung chicken feed. FGV and Bernas worked together to create the new formulation.

Haris Fadzilah Hassan, managing director of Bernas Group, had said that the country would be able to lessen its reliance on imports of poultry feed with the production of the new local chicken feed, further ensuring the availability of the product and selling it at a lower price.

According to reports, Malaysia currently produces eight million chickens annually, of which almost 10% are exported to Singapore and the remainder is distributed in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, and Penang.
