The Benefits of Further Training for Electrical Technicians

Working in the electrical engineering field is a rewarding career path that comes with lots of opportunities and the potential for advancement and high earnings. The sector is well respected and electricians carry out a vital service that means they will never be short of work in the UK. Once qualified, an electrician will have lots of choices to make, such as whether they want to work in a specific field such as industrial electrical engineering, or domestic. They will also need to decide whether working as an employed team member or a sole trader will be best for them.

The work of an electrical engineer gives them plenty of variety and there are always chances to learn something new. They also get to work with some very cool technical people who can enrich their knowledge and experience in the field. Work will vary on a daily basis and no two challenges or projects will be the same. There is also a lot of scope for flexible working, because people will always need an electrical engineer on an emergency basis. This means lots of overtime if you want it, and the chance to work shift patterns that suit your lifestyle.

To become a qualified electrician a person must study with an accredited institution that will award their certificate. At the bare minimum, anyone hoping to become an electrician will need to successfully complete an industry-recognised Level 3 qualification such as an NVQ. There are multiple courses and specialisms that will qualify someone to work as an electrician, but the training doesn’t stop once the initial qualification has been completed.

Further training for electricians builds on their knowledge foundation to increase their skill set and make them an even more valuable asset, either to themselves or to the company they work for. The more experienced and highly qualified an electrician is, the higher the salary they can command which is always a strong personal motivator.

Why employers should consider funding further training

Whichever sector the electrical company works in, it is absolutely essential that every single member of the team has at least the very basic level of electrical engineering qualification. Without it you cannot guarantee that any of the work carried out by the individual will be legal, safe, and up to the standards expected of them as a professional electrician. They will need a particular minimum level of education to carry out new works and to deliver any electrical installation condition report required by the client. This kind of work is fundamental to any electrical engineering contractor.

One area in which employers should consider providing advanced training for their teams is health and safety. Working with electricity is inherently dangerous and should not be undertaken lightly. There are several accredited courses in the UK designed to give your teams next level health and safety training, for the peace of mind of your clients, your staff, and your company as a whole. These additional certifications should be thought of as an investment because they can be used as a USP to set one electrical company or sole trader apart from another.

The technology involved in some types of electrical engineering such as industrial electrics is changing all the time which means training can become outdated over the years. It is a good idea for sole traders and employers alike to seek ongoing training where new technologies are concerned so that they can work to current standards. Training with new tech and new methods is vital to ensuring the safety of the electrician and the people coming into contact with the installation, and also for ensuring that all work undertaken is completed to a high standard and is fully compliant with current guidelines.

For anyone working in the electrical field, finding the right training can be somewhat difficult. There are lots of training providers out there of varying quality and of varying cost but the best thing to look out for when choosing a training provider is their ability to offer bespoke training packages. If they are able to offer these you will be able to pick and choose which training and certifications will be best for your needs.
