What Time Does the Stock Market Open in California?

Having the right time of day for the stock market can be essential to your trading success. If you are going to open a trading account, make sure you know the market hours. Otherwise, you may find yourself in a situation where you are missing out on a lot of potential trades.

Toronto Stock Exchange

Currently, the stock market in California opens at 9:30 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m., although it does not close at the same time on weekends.

Traditionally, most stock exchanges in North America are open for five to seven hours a day. However, advancements in electronic trading have encouraged markets to be open for trading for longer hours.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is one of two major exchanges in the United States. The other is the Nasdaq. They both operate from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., although each segment may have different hours of operation.

There are also stock exchanges in other parts of the world. For example, the Mexican Stock Exchange is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the Swiss Exchange is open at 9:00 a.m.

New York Stock Exchange

During the day, the New York Stock Exchange is open Monday through Friday. The NYSE is one of the largest stock exchanges in the world, and the largest marketplace in the United States.

During the day, the New York Stock Market is open 9:30 am to 4:00 pm EST. It is closed on weekends and federal holidays.

Aside from normal trading hours, the NYSE offers after-hours trading. After-hours trading typically extends from 4 pm to 8 pm EST. This is a great time to trade on news and to get a better idea of where the market is headed.

The New York Stock Exchange is the largest marketplace in the world. It provides investors with a central marketplace to buy and sell stocks and other investments. It also allows companies to raise capital from investors.

London Stock Exchange

Unless you live in a region where there is a major difference in time zones, the stock market will generally open at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. The time may vary in other regions.

The main US exchange is NASDAQ, located in New York City. Both exchanges are open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. The two exchanges are closed on nine federal holidays each year.

While the stock market is open all week, there are no regular trading hours on weekends. The exchanges may close for lunch breaks in Asia and Europe, but not in the Americas. In fact, most stock exchanges only open for a few hours a day.

There are eight bank holidays in the United Kingdom, including Christmas Day, and the London Stock Exchange will not open on those days. On Christmas Eve, the exchange will reduce its trading hours. On New Year's Day, the exchange will close at 1:30 p.m.

India Stock Exchange

Traders and investors should understand that the time of the stock market opening can vary from region to region. Some exchanges are open year round, while others close for holidays or lunch breaks. For example, Tokyo Stock Exchange is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time, while the Shanghai Stock Exchange operates from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. China Standard Time.

One of the most important things to remember is that stock exchanges in the United States follow Eastern Time (ET). That means they open at 9:30 a.m., close at 4:00 p.m. and have an after-hours trading session from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., though some brokers will require a minimum deposit before opening an account.

Australia Stock Exchange

During normal trading hours, the stock market in California is open from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. In addition, some markets offer pre-market trading. This is when investors can enter their orders on-line before the market opens.

Some markets, like the New York Stock Exchange, operate during overnight trading. This is a period of time when orders are queued according to price-time priority. Brokers then tidy up orders before the market closes.

During overnight trading, new orders are not taken, and brokers may amend orders. This is referred to as the 'adjust phase'.

If you are a trader, you must be in front of the trading desks when the market opens. The market is then placed in the 'Pre-CSPA' state between 4:00 pm and 4:10 pm, Sydney time.
