The Coolest Animated Movies Of All Time

1. Fantasia - This Disney classic was ambitious and lost the large European market essential for its breakeven point during its production due to the outbreak of World War II. It first made a financial profit when it was re-released in 1969 to a new generation of music lovers.

2. Pinocchio - Disney adapted to this with the production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is the film that is considered Disney's masterpiece by most old Disney animators.

3. Bambi - This gentle, lyrical film used impressionistic background paintings and realistic animal characters. Realistically looking, they were still anamorphic and it's still a little unsettling to hear the owl being dubbed "Friend Owl" from their potential food source.

4. Allegro Non-Troppo - Directed by Italian animator Bruno Bozzetto in 1976, this film is a parody of Fantasia. The animation sequences are a little more modern at times, not only thematically, but also in the use of photo collages and some live-action shots and the sequences of the animator animating the film "live" while a cheesy little orchestra of enslaved women plays the soundtrack much more fun than Deems Taylor.

5. Akira - Katsuhiro Otomo's sci-fi fantasy is the opposite of the kind of bedtime stories American audiences were used to. It's the kind of story that keeps you up at night, even if you're an adult

6. The Iron Giant - This film appears to use MAD Magazine's character design style and has a 1950s sci-fi vibe to it. Futuristic retro is a term that could be applied to this underrated Brad Bird cult film.

7. Rocktasia - This obscure cult favorite, like Allegro Non-Troppo, was a twist on Disney's Fantasia, but instead of classical music animation, its soundtrack featured hits from the classic rock era of the '60s and early '70s. The art style was based on the then-popular poster artists and ranged from Peter Max, Frank Frazetta, and Rick Griffen to Maxfield Parrish, M.C. Escher, and Hieronymus Bosch.

8. Howl's Moving Castle - A fantasy film based on The Wizard of Oz and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. A little less head-scratching than some other excellent Japanese imports, it's still from another country, if not the world.

9. The Lion King - This Disney masterpiece has the formula that makes a successful animated film; realistic animal designs that behave like animals in a natural world without humans. And great songs, this time by Elton John.

10. An American Tale - This film helped launch Don Bluth as Disney's first real competitor since the Fleischer Brothers era. A poignant tale of prejudice and oppression that is a little unsettling if the viewer is aware of the Nazi propaganda that portrayed Jews as vermin to be exterminated.
