5 Tips to Create Beauty Portraits in Natural Light

There's no doubt that you can produce stunning portraits even with artificial light, but there's something ethereal about using natural light sources. The quality of sunlight is incomparable, and it gives your photos an added edge. This is especially apparent in lifestyle product photography with models. Not only does sunlight cost you nothing, but it also creates a lovely aesthetic that doesn't require extra investments.

So, how do you shoot gorgeous portraits using only natural light?

1. Shoot during the "Golden Hour."

The hour before the sun dips below the horizon and the first hour after it rises are when professional photographers take advantage of natural lighting. These periods are lovingly called "the golden hour" or "magic hour" because they create dreamy conditions to snap enviable photos. For example, if you're photographing clothing, have the model wear it while walking in a field during golden hour so that direct sun illuminates the fabric and creates an ethereal effect.

2. Front-lighting

To make your portraits pop using natural light, have your subject face the sun. This will add a gorgeous sheen to faces and cut down on shadows cast by them. That said, be mindful of your own shadow, as it can ruin the shot.

3. Backlighting

The opposite of front lighting, backlighting is when the sun illuminates your subject from behind. This results in a silhouette with a soft, glowing effect on the edges of the subject. It's often used to create mystery or drama surrounding the subject matter.

4. Go indoors

Going indoors doesn't mean you have to rely on artificial light. You can still use natural light; you'll just need to be a little more creative with your positioning. Windows are your best friend when shooting portraits indoors. Place your subject near a window so that soft, diffused light fills the room. You can also shoot through sheer curtains to create a similar effect.

5. Work with a professional

If you want to take perfect portraits using natural light, it's wisest to hire a professional photographer familiar with a variety of lighting conditions. With lifestyle product photography with models, having somebody who knows how to utilise different light sources and position the subject is key to success.

Get out there and start shooting some gorgeous natural light portraits!
