This artificially intelligent speaker would be voice-activated, just like Siri on your iPhone or your Apple TV, and be able to play music, pull up news headlines or read/write emails for you.

The anonymous source also revealed that third-party app developers may be able to create Siri-powered apps of their own, rumoured to be announced at Apple's worldwide developer conference WWDC.

But it isn't the only voice-powered assistant around - earlier this month, Google unveiled Google Home, a tiny speaker-cum-microphone that can assist you using a range of Google services from email to calendar and search.

Voice assistants sold by Google and Apple will not be limited to the US, and support multiple languages so could potentially scale to more countries around the world.

"Computing is evolving beyond phones, and people are using it in context across many scenarios, be it in their television, be it in their car, be it something they wear on their wrist or even something much more immersive," Google's chief executive Sundar Pichai said.

Leaked screenshots also seem to confirm that Apple will integrate Siri into its new generation of Macs, allowing you to search and navigate your laptop hands-free.
