Shree Jagannath Temple Puri

Dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, Shree jagannath temple puri is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in India. It is a place of great spiritual significance and is an important part of the pious Char Dham Yatra with Badrinath, Dwarka, and Rameshwaram.


This ancient shrine is a must-visit for every Hindu. It is built in the Kalinga style and features a tall main structure that is believed to be the tallest building in ancient India. It is a beautiful example of the skill and craftsmanship of the artisans who built it in the 10th century.

The Temple is located in the city of Puri, a district in eastern Odisha on the Bay of Bengal and it is 60 kilometers from the state capital Bhubaneswar.


It is a world heritage site and it has a lot of historical value. The temple is a popular tourist attraction that attracts people from all over the world.


Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at the temple. They can take a dip in the holy water of the river Ganges, see the famous gilded statues of the deities, and also witness the many rituals that are performed during the temple hours.

In addition, various religious festivals are observed in the temple during the year. Many Hindu festivals take place during this time, including Snana Yatra, Netrotsava, Ratha Yatra (car festival), Sayan Ekadasi, Chitalagi Amabasya, Srikrushna Janma, and Dussehra.


The most iconic festival in the temple is the Rath Yatra (car festival). Thousands of devotees throng this sacred site to witness Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath during the celebration.


This festival is considered to be the most awaited event of the temple which is celebrated twice a year, on the second day of Asadha month and the day of Dussehra. It is one of the biggest festivals in the temple and the chariots of the deities are taken to different parts of the temple.


During this festival, the deities are dressed in new clothes and adorned with different jewels and flowers. During this festival, several special sevaks perform different rituals inside the temple. They change the deities’ clothes and offer Tulasi leaves to them.


It is also a tradition for the priests to change the flag of the main temple. This is done every evening, and it has been done for the past 800 years!
