Berber carpets are one of the best selling carpets in the present times. They had earned a lot of criticism in the past but now most of the myths have been dispelled and its sale is almost as good as cut pile Saxony.

It is not only a very durable carpet, but is fast building a reputation as a stain resistant one as well, even with the trademark light colors. There is a large variety available in the markets in terms of the carpet fibers, carpet density, and carpet construction; so make sure you are fully aware of what you plan to buy and it matches your needs. It does have some minor care differences from the regular carpets; you just have to be aware.

This carpet actually gets its name from the Northwestern African tribe, which goes by the same name.

Traditionally it's made of natural materials like wool and camel hair, and is not only meant to be used as a floor covering but also as a cloak, to protect the tribesmen from the cold winter nights. Typically a Berber has light shades like white, off-white and camel etc; however with the surge in demand these days, darker and different varieties are also available. As a carpet it's dense and piles less than the other choices also, is truly unique and easily identifiable. These days many synthetic materials are used in making this type of carpet like nylon, olefin and their blends. Olefin is the most famous and the least expensive one.

The types of designs include level-loop, multi-level-loop as well as cut-and-loop designs and basically depend on the manufacturer. Overall it's a very good choice for offices, schools and other areas which bear a high traffic as it's durable, stain resistant and more affordable than the plush varieties of the carpets. It shows less footprints and vacuum cleaner marks, is curiously elegant with a casual appeal and is very comfortable to walk on. Berber is suitable for the entire home and office and will make it stand out markedly from places which have the usual carpets.

Cleaning and care of the Berber has been one of the most contentious topics, if you know how to do it the right way you are sure to be beaming about owning one.

The short loops with variance in the twists add a dense look to it, making it difficult for the dirt to work its way in, the same property also makes it difficult to clean. The best thing to do is to have regular vacuum sessions but without using the brushing or beater bar attachment, the idea is to get the dirt out while its still on the surface of the carpet. A popular choice for Berber, Olefin is stain resistant towards both chemicals and moisture. Olefin Berber's are also very good candidates for steam cleaning.

The other popular choice is the Nylon Berbers, these are more aesthetically attractive than the olefin variety and is less expensive and hassle-prone than the wool Berbers. It wears out well even with frequent cleaning sessions and maintains its luster too. Nylon Berbers are also best kept clean with the frequent vacuuming only (without using the brushing or beater bar attachment).Dry cleaning is also a very good choice, and is preferred over steam cleaning.
