Child Marriage Is A Rampant Practice That Must Be Addressed

Child marriage is a social problem that has been prevalent in India for centuries. Although it is illegal in India, it still occurs in many parts of the country, especially in rural areas. According to UNICEF (2014), 1 in 3 child brides in the world is from India. Child marriage has a devastating impact on young girls, depriving them of their childhood, education, and health. It also puts girls in terrible danger of abuse and makes them prone to deep-rooted inter-generational effects.

The impact of child marriage on young girls is enormous. First and foremost, child marriage denies girls their right to education. Instead of going to school and getting an education, these girls are forced into early marriage and are expected to take care of their husbands and families. This not only robs them of the opportunity to build a better future for themselves but also perpetuates the cycle of poverty.

Child marriage also has severe consequences on the health of young girls. Early marriage often leads to early pregnancies, which puts both the mother and the child at risk. Girls who get married before the age of 18 are more likely to suffer from maternal mortality and morbidity. They are also at a higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Child marriage has psychological implications as well. Young girls are often forced into marriage against their will and are expected to fulfill the roles of a wife and mother, which they may not be ready for. This can lead to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

To protect young girls from the harmful effects of child marriage, there is a need for a concerted effort from the government, non-profits, and individuals. The government should implement strict laws and enforce them effectively to curb the practice of child marriage. It is also crucial to increase awareness among parents, community leaders, and religious leaders about the harmful effects of child marriage.

In addition, girls should be empowered to make decisions about their lives, including when and whom they want to marry. Education plays a vital role in empowering girls and breaking the cycle of poverty. Therefore, there is a need to invest in education, especially for girls, to ensure they have the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their lives.

This is where CRY UK, a charity for children, has been working hard to give a safer future to girls in India. Donate money to charity to help CRY UK ensure a collaborative effort from all stakeholders to enforce the law, increase awareness, and empower girls to make decisions about their lives. Donate now!
