Scientists have found some new stuff down the back of the sofa of the universe, somehow realising that four new types of element exist around us.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is the lucky institution given the job of coordinating the naming process for the newly confirmed finds, and it's plumped for:

Nihonium symbol Nh , named after Japan seeing as it was found at the country's RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science, and given an atomic number of 113.

Tennessine Ts , numbered 117 and named after Tennessee.

Oganesson Og!

and number 118 , named after Russian physicist Yuri Oganessian, who helped in a big way when it came to tracking down these exciting new little Lego bricks of the universe, hence he gets a pretty amazing piece of irrevocable scientific history all to himself.

The IUPAC approved these suggestions made by the discoverers themselves, and there'll now be a five-month public review of the ideas to make sure they don't mean anything rude in Italy or Mexico and can therefore be officially adopted and memorised for use in future pub quizzes.
