With the iPhone 7 widely expected to be an incremental upgrade, all eyes are on Apple's 2017 hardware roadmap and by connection the iPhone 8.
But what can we expect?
According to the latest murmurings, potentially big things indeed.
A new patent filing with the USPTO reveals Apple is progressing with its plans for a virtual reality headset, or "Head-Mounted Display Apparatus For Retaining A Portable Electronic Device With Display" if you prefer.
The patent was first spotted by UploadVR and reveals a headset that would 'couple' itself with an iPhone in the same way that a Samsung phone slots in and out of a Gear VR, coming with features like integrated headphones and a Lightning connector.
The form factor appears to differ slightly from what's currently available on the market, however, with the proposed Apple VR headset sporting a more sunglass/spectacle-like design.
