It has been a fixture of Apple s computers for years, instantly recognisable and unchanged since 1998.

But with the release of the new MacBook Pro last week, it has been consigned to history.

No, it s not the traditional USB port: Apple has dropped the iconic bong sound that its laptops make when started up.

The chime - a fading F sharp chord - has been used on every Mac since the iMac G3.

The sound has become a cultural icon, and was famously used in the Pixar film WALL-E when the movie s robot protagonist reboots, although it never made it to the iPhone or iPad.
