In a series of talks and meetings this week in Salt Lake City, Christensen remained the provocateur, sharing surprising takes on everything from Ikea, Airbnb and Google to the reasons why people buy milkshakes.

Top of mind for him these days is the question of how big companies can rekindle growth.

Suppose someone is trying to furnish a new apartment from scratch, with only a weekend to do so, Christensen asked his Qualtrics audience.

Ikea's furniture is hardly premium quality, he noted.

But because Ikea emphasizes quick assembly, instant availability and low prices, it does a uniquely good job of solving the job of furnishing an apartment in a hurry.

The payoff: a lucrative global business with no direct competitors.
