Photo fans, get ready for Polaroid news on Wednesday.

The camera company is currently running a teaser banner suggesting some potentially big analog camera news is coming next week.

Outside of the countdown, Polaroid isn’t dropping too many hints on exactly what that announcement might be.

The banner displays several teaser statements, some of them more obscure than others.

Among the less vague statements are suggestions of “analog dreams.” One slide lists four types of 8×10 film the company previously made while another alludes to “the most complex set of man-made chemical reactions ever.”

The countdown suggests that the announcement will be just as big as one made in 1977.

And, as fans of the movie franchise know, these spoofs are of the affectionate variety, created out of reverence for the films rather than to mock them – most of the time, anyway.

You could spend days trawling through the endless parade of spoof videos on YouTube, ranging from Robot Chicken to Family Guy to Community.

If there was a prize for completeness of a parody, then without doubt the award would go to the Blue Harvest episode of Family Guy.

In the episode the electricity goes out, so Peter retells his family the story of A New Hope, with the show's characters playing the leading roles – Chris is Luke, Peter is Han, Brian is Chewbacca – and Stewie is Vader, of course.

Various episodes of The Simpsons

The Simpsons first hit our screens four years after the release of Return of the Jedi, and by the time The Phantom Menace was released we were reaching the point where the show's decline began Simpsons nerds tend to agree it was around Season 12 .

To see Moore's law in action, you have get extra close to the central processing unit CPU .

This tiny 32-bit Motorola 68030, with 273,000 transistors - each with data caches of 256 bytes - was captured by Miami-based photographer Christoph Morlinghaus for his Computerwelt series.

"It's possible to cram so much information and components on to such a small object," says Morlinghaus, "it's like an aerial view of a city."

To expose the workings of the one-square-centimetre chip, Morlinghaus opened the microprocessor by melting the welding material before placing it 2.5cm away from his camera.

Each transistor - shown here as the densely packed blocks that make up the "roofs" of the cityscape - is only one millimetre in diameter, so getting them in focus wasn't easy.

"Nobody has taken photographs of something so small on 8 x 10 film before," he says.
