AMC Theatres announced a new service today called AMC Theatres On Demand — a marketplace where members of AMC’s Stubs loyalty program can buy or rent individual movies to watch at home.

The launch of an iTunes-style, à la carte movie marketplace seems almost quaint at a time when all the major media companies seem to be following Netflix’s lead and readying their own subscription streaming services.

But it’s a noteworthy bet on a slightly old-fashioned model, and it’s also interesting as an effort by the world’s largest theatrical chain to diversify, particularly as box office numbers decline.

In the announcement, AMC Theatres President and CEO Adam Aron argued that AMC has a particular advantage, because it can use its data about the movie-going habits of Stubs members to deliver targeted offers.

“The addition of AMC Theatres On Demand, which extends our movie offerings for AMC Stubs members into their homes, makes perfect sense for AMC Theatres, for our studio partners and for our millions of movie-loving guests,” said Aron in a statement.

“With more than 20 million AMC Stubs households, and with our web site and smartphone apps already being visited hundreds of millions of times annually by movie fans, AMC Theatres is in a unique position to promote specific movies with greater personalization than has ever been possible before.”

Marvel fans have a big event to look forward to on April 27, as it marks the opening of Avengers: Infinity War.

Even before that special day, though, AMC Theatres will offer die-hard fans an equally special cinematic event.

The cinema chain is hosting the ultimate Marvel Cinematic Universe marathon.

So far, the specifics of the event haven’t been revealed, but know that attendees can expect their mettle to be tested.

The screening is expected to include all of the franchise’s 18 films to date, which span a decade, from 2008’s Iron Man to 2018’s Black Panther.

News of the marathon came via a page on the AMC Theatres website, but as a company spokesperson told Digital Trends, it was a mockup page that was mistakenly made public.

Classic science-fiction blockbuster The Matrix is returning to theaters for a single week, AMC Theatres has revealed.

The movie was released on March 31, 1999, more than 20 years ago.

The re-release will give younger fans the chance to experience the movie in theaters with the latest cinematic technologies, including Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

The movie’s celebratory return to theaters was revealed by AMC Theatres and Dolby, the latter of which announced that The Matrix has been remastered in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for an improved cinematic experience.

Dolby released a retro-styled trailer (below) to announce the plan:

Of course, the 20th-anniversary celebration is happening a few months later than the movie’s actual anniversary — it’s unclear whether Warner Bros. had planned to have a limited theater run this year or if this is a last-minute release.

They allow members to get discounted rates on movie tickets every month, and offer a variety of perks, restrictions, and other elements that make them worth consideration for anyone who regularly attends movies or would like to do so more often.

What it is: Launched in June 2018, A-List added a subscription-based monthly ticket service to the chain’s existing loyalty program following years of public feuds with MoviePass.

Restrictions: A-List subscribers are limited to AMC theater locations, and there are no deals for purchasing additional tickets for the same screening (if you want to bring a friend, for example).

You can also see the same movie multiple times, including in-demand blockbusters, and purchase tickets in advance.

What else to consider: The entire service is managed through the AMC Theaters app, making it one of the more convenient services available.

Restrictions: The plan only offers six movies each week, and MoviePass subscribers have to choose from those six films, which include some smaller, independent films as well as major releases.

The latest attempt from struggling theater subscription service MoviePass to retain its dwindling user base comes in the form of yet another change to its monthly plan.

This time, however, the company is automatically enrolling lapsed former subscribers into its service, saying its choosing those users to be part of a “select test group” to try a version of MoviePass similar to its original one-movie-per-day plan.

In an email sent to select MoviePass customers who decided not to opt into the company’s revised three-movie monthly plan, first unveiled last month, the company says it’s decided to enroll those people into a new subscription because “we really hope you begin enjoying your MoviePass subscription.” If they don’t want to be charged for the service, MoviePass is demanding they proactively opt-out of the plan they were enrolled in without their consent by Thursday, October 4th.
