It feels like almost every single day, a new Stephen King property moves forward in Hollywood.

Yesterday, it was The Boogeyman.

A few weeks ago, it was the sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep.

Now, the remake of Firestarter has taken a jump forward by landing acclaimed director Fatih Akin.

Variety reports Akin will helm the King remake for Universal and Blumhouse, with Scott Teems writing and Akiva Goldsman, who was originally attached to direct, producing.

Akin isn’t well-known in the mainstream, but his films, such as Soul Kitchen, Goodbye Berlin, and Golden Globe winner In the Fade, have garnered some attention on the festival circuit.

"It's a little bit larger than the original series in terms of scope and scale, says showrunner Alex Kurtzman.

The trailer, which premiered Saturday at Comic-Con ahead of the show's panel, was much more involved than previous one, with more explosions and more potent quotables.

This was our second extended look at the show, which will air first on CBS on September 24, then be available on CBS All Access.

Moderator Rainn Wilson, who plays iconic character Harvey Mudd, opened the panel with "We are warriors!"

"Star Trek is built around empathy, uniquely," said Akiva Goldsman.

Speaking to the diversity that is Star Trek, Anthony Rapp announced that he is playing the first openly gay character in the series.

Tom Hanks has played an astronaut (in Apollo 13) and a toy (Woody, in the Toy Story series).

But how about combining space and toys?

According to Variety, Hanks will play Major Matt Mason, the 1960s-era space action figure, in an upcoming feature film.

Mattel and Paramount Pictures did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the Variety report says screenwriter Akiva Goldsman will adapt the script from a short story by Michael Chabon.

Goldsman and Hanks worked together on The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

Major Matt Mason was a Mattel action figure introduced in 1966 who lived and worked on the moon.

Monument Valley, the award-winning and beautifully designed mobile puzzler from ustwo Games, is being turned into a movie, according to a report from Deadline.

While the game involves a manipulating Escher-like architecture in order to guide a princess through her quest, the movie version will feature live-action characters being thrown into the game’s “mind-bending world,” the report says.

Paramount Pictures and Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures have selected Patrick Osborne to direct the movie, which the studios hope to turn into a franchise.

There’s already more material for them to use, if that’s the case – Monument Valley’s sequel continued the story, this time guiding a mother and a child through the magical architecture.

Osborne won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for “Feast,” and is now directing “Nimona” for Fox and Blue Sky, based on the popular graphic novel.

That experience could serve him well for this unusual choice.

This job does things to you, folks.

Once, I would be surprised and bemused by the things Hollywood tries to turn into major franchises in 2019.

I might observe how the truth now matches what we used to make up as parody.

But, look, Battleship is a real movie and Rihanna was in it and that was seven years ago.

So let’s just skip the song and dance.

They’re making a Space Invaders movie, alright?

Almost two decades after the BBC adapted Mervyn Peake’s classic fantasy series Gormenghast, Neil Gaiman is finally achieving his dream of bringing it back to the screen.

According to Deadline, FremantleMedia has secured the rights to produce a TV series, with Gaiman and Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) leading the adaptation.

Gaiman’s spent the past couple of years working to adapt Gormenghast, about the inhabitants of an isolated and decaying castle.

He first hinted back in 2015 that he was working on turning it into a movie, with the full support of Fabian Peake, Mervyn Peake’s son.

Two of the books were turned into a four-part BBC miniseries in 2000—which starred Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Christopher Lee—and fans have been eager to see another adaptation.

“There is nothing in literature like Mervyn Peake’s remarkable Gormenghast novels,” Gaiman said in a statement.

Patrick Stewart may return to Star Trek under a new deal that revives his The Next Generation role.

Sources talking about the alleged show claim Alex Kurtzman, who has renewed his contract with CBS, is working with Akiva Goldsman on the reboot.

Even better, the sources claim that Patrick Stewart may return to the rebooted series in his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

The information comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which reports that Kurtzman has penned a renewed deal with CBS that will keep him with the network until 2023.

Kurtzman serves as executive producer for Star Trek: Discovery, the relatively new Star Trek series offered exclusively through CBS All Access, its on-demand and live streaming TV app.

Kurtzman will be taking over Discovery‘s showrunner role, replacing both Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, who were fired earlier this year.

The most venerable captain in Star Fleet history is back.

As has been rumoured for a while, CBS announced today that Sir Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean Luc-Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation, will be reprising his role in a new series that will explore “the new chapter in Picard’s life.” The series will be coming to CBS All Access, though not many more details about it are known at this time.

It has been almost 20 years, but one of Tom Clancy's best novels could finally hit the big screen soon.

A number of Tom Clancy’s famous novels have been adapted into films, including Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears, and Patriot Games, but the author’s special-operations novel Rainbow Six hasn’t received the big-screen treatment yet.

That appears to be changing, with producer Akiva Goldsman developing a film based on the novel for Paramount.

According to Deadline, the film will follow the story of Clancy’s 1998 book, with former Navy SEAL John Clark leading “an international task force to combat terrorism.” Ryan Reynolds is reportedly in early talks to play Clark.

Though this will be the first Rainbow Six film, it isn’t the first time we’ve seen the character on camera.

He was played Willem Dafoe and Liev Screiber in Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears, respectively, opposite Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan.

The recent Star Trek films have proved popular, but it remains to be seen how Star Trek: Discovery — the new CBS All Access show set 10 years before the original series — will fare.

With a new extended trailer released during San Diego Comic-Con 2017, fans get a taste for what the chapter will bring.

Sonequa Martin-Green (First Officer Michael Burnham), Jason Isaacs (Captain Gabriel Lorca), Doug Jones (Lieutenant Saru), Mary Weisman (Cadet Sylvia Tilly), James Frain (Ambassador Sarek), Shazad Latif (Lieutenant Ash Tyler), Anthony Rapp (Lieutenant Paul Stamets), Rainn Wilson (Harry Mudd), and executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Gretchen Berg, Aaron Harberts, Heather Kadin, and Akiva Goldsman also shed some light on the project at a press conference during the convention.

Getting transported, using a phaser, and sitting in the captain’s chair were all thrills for him.

While he’s playing Harry Mudd, a charismatic rogue from the original series, he called his character a reimagining.

It is a challenge,” he said of his role as Sarek, a Vulcan ambassador and Spock’s father.

Star Trek: Discovery has a lot riding on it, both for CBS executives (who are counting on the show to help them launch their paid streaming service, CBS All Access) and Star Trek fans (who’ve been waiting more than a decade for a new Trek series).

The first episode, “The Vulcan Hello,” aired on CBS, while the second, “Battle at the Binary Stars,” was available immediately afterwards on All Access — and CBS says Discovery drove record sign-ups for the streaming service.

Well, I wouldn’t say it was a great premiere (and I’ll have more thoughts to share on this week’s episode of the Original Content podcast), but it was effective at establishing how the show might break the franchise template without totally abandoning the elements that Star Trek fans love.

Discovery takes place about 10 years before the original series.

It stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, a human who was raised by the Vulcan Sarek (for non-Trek fans: Sarek is also Spock’s dad) and now serves as first officer on the U.S.S.

In the first episode (plotted by series creators Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, with a teleplay by Fuller and Akiva Goldsman), an investigation into a damaged “interstellar relay” quickly leads into a confrontation with the Klingon Empire — a confrontation that sets the stage for the rest of the season, and perhaps the rest of the series.
