A Burger King TV advert which was designed to activate Google Home smart speakers and some Android phones to describe its Whopper burgers has been hijacked by members of the public.

Google did not publicly confirm this, saying only that it had "no involvement" in the campaign.

But Burger King confirmed to the BBC that after the first iteration of the ad was blocked, it ran a tweaked version on US TV.

According to a Burger King spokeswoman, the new ad was revoiced using a "different intonation" that bypassed the ban.

Whether Burger King expected users to go on to make their own, less flattering edits is unclear but Emily Tan, technology editor at marketing news website Campaign, thinks it might have been aware such a reaction was likely.

The Impossible Whopper’s debut at Burger King as gone from a not-April-Fool’s-joke to a nationwide rollout by year-end.

Originally launched on April 1st at 58 restaurants in St. Louis, the Impossible Burger will be on Burger King menus in additional markets soon and will be available at every Burger King by the end of the year, according to multiple reports.

For Burger King, the roll out of the Impossible Burger enabled the company to snag new customers while not eating into its core business of selling Whoppers.

It’s about optionality, and the ability to “give somebody who wants to eat a burger every day, but doesn’t necessarily want to eat beef everyday, permission to come into the restaurants more frequently,” Chris Finazzo, president of Burger King North America, told CNN Business when discussing the initial test.

Burger King has sold vegetarian patties for a while (from Morningstar), but the addition of the Impossible Foods burger to its national lineup makes the company the largest national fast food chain to embrace alternative proteins (a growing consumer category).

News of the Impossible Burger’s impossibly well received debut in St. Louis was a bright spot in what would otherwise be a fairly downbeat earnings call, for Burger King’s parent company, Restaurant Brands (its first quarter net income fell 9% to $135 million on weaker same-store sales growth), according to a report by the Associated Press.

Another praises “the tender all-white chicken inside.”

Burger King is still flogging this trend to throw shade at its main competitor McDonald’s, whose mascot is the irrepressible Ronald McDonald.

The company is citing data that clowns are the third most requested Halloween outfit this year, partially due to the movie, and at its at Leicester Square flagship restaurant in London, Burger King is doling out free Whoppers to people dressed as clowns who visit on the 28th between 7pm and 3am – at least to the first 500 visitors.

Renato Rossi, head of marketing for Burger King UK, said: “The Burger King brand is known for welcoming all customers and putting the crown on everyone’s head.

But never sleep on the King, because he could come calling any minute.

That’s a lesson KFC is learning this week with the launch of a new Burger King spot that dresses its King mascot in a white suit, shiny belt buckle and a bolo tie (of sorts) to dub him the KFG: King of Flame Grilling.

At the heart of the spot, created by MullenLowe, is a new grilled chicken sandwich, which bodes well for KFC in the sense that Burger King isn’t going all-in on the Colonel’s core turf of fried chicken.

(Burger King has an odd history with chicken.
