Nvidia on Tuesday unveiled a new artificial intelligence computer designed to drive fully autonomous taxis.

Codenamed Pegasus, the new hardware builds on Nvidia’s existing Drive PX platform to enable Level 5 autonomy – in other words, vehicles without steering wheels, pedals and mirrors that require zero input from passengers to get to their destinations.

The new Drive DX Pegasus system is powered by two of Nvidia’s newest Xavier SoC processors (with an embedded GPU based on the Nvidia Volta architecture) alongside two next-gen discrete GPUs.

The system is designed for ASIL D certification (the industry's highest safety level) with automotive inputs/outputs including CAN (controller area network), Flexray, 16 dedicated high-speed sensor inputs for camera, radar, lidar and ultrasonics, plus multiple 10Gbit Ethernet connectors.

The graphics card maker claims the system is capable of delivering over 320 trillion operations per second which is more than 10 times as powerful as its predecessor, the Drive PX 2.

Its combined memory bandwidth exceeds 1 terabyte per second, we’re told.

Researchers from Tencent's Keen Security Labs totally hack the Tesla S over Wi-Fi.

Security researchers at the Chinese Internet company Tencent's Keen Security Lab privately revealed a security bug in Tesla Model S cars that allowed an attacker to achieve remote access to a vehicle's Controller Area Network CAN and take over functions of the vehicle while parked or moving.

The Keen researchers were able to remotely open the doors and trunk of an unmodified Model S, and they were also able to take control of its display.

Perhaps most notably, the researchers remotely activated the brakes of a moving Model S wirelessly once the car had been breached by an attack on the car's built-in Web browser.

Tesla has already issued an over-the-air firmware patch to fix the situation.

Previous hacks of Tesla vehicles have required physical access to the car.

With very limited amounts of driving data we can enable very powerful and accurate inferences about the driver s identity, says Miro Enev, a former University of Washington researcher who worked on the study before taking a job as a machine-learning engineer at Belkin.

And the researchers argue that ability to pinpoint could have unexpected privacy implications: Everything from letting insurance companies punish drivers who loan their cars to their teenage kids, to confirming the identity of a driver who violated traffic laws or caused a collision.

In fact, drivers are increasingly sending that sensitive data to the cloud with gadgets like Hum, Vinli, Automatic and Zubee, designed to be plugged into their cars CAN networks via a port under the vehicle s dashboard.

Then the researchers tried using a machine learning algorithm to analyze each portion of those drivers routes for every driver.

But in their paper, the researchers propose other situations in which it might represent a privacy violation.

The driver detection research is only the latest study to point to the danger of internet-connected cars, and particularly internet-connected devices plugged into cars CAN networks.

Tiny device could drive remote CAN bus assassinations

Black Hat VIDEO Car hackers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek have again hacked a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, this time by physically linking a laptop to commandeer its steering and kill the brakes.

The duo have captured the hack to be presented at Black Hat Las Vegas this week in video proof-of-concept demonstrations.

The compromise requires attackers to be physically present in order to compromise the car.

However Miller confirmed this writer's suggestion that the attacks could be carried out using a concealed device which either contains automated and timed commands, or iwth remote attacks over a wireless link.

Such a feat which Miller says were "most definitely" possible could be considered a vector for targeted, albeit over-engineered, assassination.

Sales of connected autonomous vehicles by 2025 projected to be 70% of light-duty vehicles

Israeli car security startup Karamba Security has banked $2.5m in fresh investment, which it plans to use to extend its technology to autonomous vehicles.

The tech will be geared towards protecting engine control units ECUs in robot cars from hackers and malware infections.

Miscreants typically infiltrate a vehicle by first compromising internet-connected infotainment or navigation systems, or by plugging a dongle into the onboard diagnostics port, and then traversing the CAN bus to the control unit to hijack the ride.

The gear also defends against in-memory attacks such as the hack recently demonstrated against Tesla cars by Chinese security researchers.

David Barzilai, chairman and co-founder at Karamba Security, told El Reg that the design of autonomous cars offers hackers even more ways to hack vehicles.

An investigation into the computer security of small airplanes, the results of which were made public this week, will be sure to generate some flashy headlines.

However, there are important caveats.

The probe in question, carried out by Patrick Kiley, a senior security consultant at Rapid7, shows just how easy it is to hack a small plane.

"Small aircraft typically maintain the direct mechanical linkage between the flight controls and the flight surface.

"This is similar to how most modern automobiles no longer have a physical connection between the throttle and the actuator that causes the engine to accelerate."

Tesla Motors is considered one of the most cybersecurity-conscious car manufacturers in the world—among other things, it has a bug bounty program.

Researchers from Chinese technology company Tencent found a series of vulnerabilities that, when combined, allowed them to remotely take over a Tesla Model S car and control its sunroof, central display, door locks and even the breaking system.

The attack allowed the researchers to access the car s controller area network CAN bus, which lets the vehicle s specialized computers communicate with each other.

As far as we know, this is the first case of remote attack which compromises CAN Bus to achieve remote controls on Tesla cars, the researchers from Tencent s Keen Security Lab said in a blog post Monday.

We have verified the attack vector on multiple varieties of Tesla Model S. It is reasonable to assume that other Tesla models are affected.

If you’ve always wanted to drop 1,000 horsepower-worth of supercharged V8 into your daily-driver, great news: Mopar’s Hellephant crate engine is almost here.

Mopar – named after the contraction of MOtor and PARts – previewed the “Hellephant” 426 Supercharged Crate HEMI Engine and Kit last year, at SEMA 2018.

The company has offered high-horsepower crate engines before, of course, but even then the Hellephant stood out.

The supercharged V8’s 950 lb-ft of torque, too, is legitimately astonishing.

In the process, it makes 2017’s Hellcrate engine, with its 707 horsepower, look almost pedestrian.

To get to 1,000 hp, Mopar had some work to do.

Researchers from Tencent's Keen Security Labs totally hack the Tesla S over Wi-Fi.

Security researchers at the Chinese Internet company Tencent's Keen Security Lab privately revealed a security bug in Tesla Model S cars that allowed an attacker to achieve remote access to a vehicle's Controller Area Network CAN and take over functions of the vehicle while parked or moving.

The Keen researchers were able to remotely open the doors and trunk of an unmodified Model S, and they were also able to take control of its display.

Perhaps most notably, the researchers remotely activated the brakes of a moving Model S wirelessly once the car had been breached by an attack on the car's built-in Web browser.

Tesla has already issued an over-the-air firmware patch to fix the situation.

Previous hacks of Tesla vehicles have required physical access to the car.

Tiny device could drive remote CAN bus assassinations

Black Hat VIDEO Car hackers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek have again hacked a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, this time by physically linking a laptop to commandeer its steering and kill the brakes.

The duo have captured the hack to be presented at Black Hat Las Vegas this week in video proof-of-concept demonstrations.

The compromise requires attackers to be physically present in order to compromise the car.

However Miller confirmed this writer's suggestion that the attacks could be carried out using a concealed device which either contains automated and timed commands, or iwth remote attacks over a wireless link.

Such a feat which Miller says were "most definitely" possible could be considered a vector for targeted, albeit over-engineered, assassination.

An investigation into the computer security of small airplanes, the results of which were made public this week, will be sure to generate some flashy headlines.

However, there are important caveats.

Nvidia on Tuesday unveiled a new artificial intelligence computer designed to drive fully autonomous taxis.

Codenamed Pegasus, the new hardware builds on Nvidia’s existing Drive PX platform to enable Level 5 autonomy – in other words, vehicles without steering wheels, pedals and mirrors that require zero input from passengers to get to their destinations.

The new Drive DX Pegasus system is powered by two of Nvidia’s newest Xavier SoC processors (with an embedded GPU based on the Nvidia Volta architecture) alongside two next-gen discrete GPUs.

The system is designed for ASIL D certification (the industry's highest safety level) with automotive inputs/outputs including CAN (controller area network), Flexray, 16 dedicated high-speed sensor inputs for camera, radar, lidar and ultrasonics, plus multiple 10Gbit Ethernet connectors.

The graphics card maker claims the system is capable of delivering over 320 trillion operations per second which is more than 10 times as powerful as its predecessor, the Drive PX 2.

Its combined memory bandwidth exceeds 1 terabyte per second, we’re told.

With very limited amounts of driving data we can enable very powerful and accurate inferences about the driver s identity, says Miro Enev, a former University of Washington researcher who worked on the study before taking a job as a machine-learning engineer at Belkin.

And the researchers argue that ability to pinpoint could have unexpected privacy implications: Everything from letting insurance companies punish drivers who loan their cars to their teenage kids, to confirming the identity of a driver who violated traffic laws or caused a collision.

In fact, drivers are increasingly sending that sensitive data to the cloud with gadgets like Hum, Vinli, Automatic and Zubee, designed to be plugged into their cars CAN networks via a port under the vehicle s dashboard.

Then the researchers tried using a machine learning algorithm to analyze each portion of those drivers routes for every driver.

But in their paper, the researchers propose other situations in which it might represent a privacy violation.

Sales of connected autonomous vehicles by 2025 projected to be 70% of light-duty vehicles

Israeli car security startup Karamba Security has banked $2.5m in fresh investment, which it plans to use to extend its technology to autonomous vehicles.

The tech will be geared towards protecting engine control units ECUs in robot cars from hackers and malware infections.

Miscreants typically infiltrate a vehicle by first compromising internet-connected infotainment or navigation systems, or by plugging a dongle into the onboard diagnostics port, and then traversing the CAN bus to the control unit to hijack the ride.

The gear also defends against in-memory attacks such as the hack recently demonstrated against Tesla cars by Chinese security researchers.

David Barzilai, chairman and co-founder at Karamba Security, told El Reg that the design of autonomous cars offers hackers even more ways to hack vehicles.

As far as we know, this is the first case of remote attack which compromises CAN Bus to achieve remote controls on Tesla cars, the researchers from Tencent s Keen Security Lab said in a blog post Monday.

We have verified the attack vector on multiple varieties of Tesla Model S. It is reasonable to assume that other Tesla models are affected.

If you’ve always wanted to drop 1,000 horsepower-worth of supercharged V8 into your daily-driver, great news: Mopar’s Hellephant crate engine is almost here.

Mopar – named after the contraction of MOtor and PARts – previewed the “Hellephant” 426 Supercharged Crate HEMI Engine and Kit last year, at SEMA 2018.

The company has offered high-horsepower crate engines before, of course, but even then the Hellephant stood out.

The supercharged V8’s 950 lb-ft of torque, too, is legitimately astonishing.

In the process, it makes 2017’s Hellcrate engine, with its 707 horsepower, look almost pedestrian.

To get to 1,000 hp, Mopar had some work to do.
