Recently the article Alternative Medicine Warning: Some Chinese Herbs May Increase Cancer Risk came to my attention.

Having more than a passing interest in Chinese herbal medicine, I chased down the original article, Population-Based Case-Control Study of Chinese Herbal Products Containing Aristolochic Acid and Urinary Tract Cancer Risk (Lai, Wang, et.

The authors conclude, "Consumption of aristolochic acid-containing Chinese herbal products [mu tong] is associated with an increased risk of cancer of the urinary tract in a dose-dependent manner that is independent of arsenic exposure.

" A long time student of mathematics and a more recent student of public health and biostatistics, I set about critically analyzing this paper.

I have two observations importance of biostatistics in public health management that cause me to personally call to question the validity of the authors' conclusion.

Chuan mu tong is effectively used to treat urinary tract infections and promote lactation in cases of blocked milk ducts.

Despite brimming data showing that drinking coffee can be good for your health, there has been a lingering black stain on the popular drink s reputation—the 1991 assessment by the World Health Organization that classified coffee as a possible carcinogen.

In a Wednesday announcement and an accompanying article in the journal The Lancet Oncology, the WHO reversed that 1991 classification, striking coffee from the Group 2b list of foods and beverages that are possibly carcinogenic to humans.

That initial classification was based on limited evidence of an association with cancer of the urinary bladder from case-control studies, and inadequate evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals.

For more than 20 other types of cancers, the effect of coffee drinking was inconclusive, the experts found.

Similarly, the experts reviewed data on maté, a strong caffeinated drink particularly popular in South America.

In the US, standard coffee serving temperatures range from 70 to 85 degrees Celsius 158 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit .

Can mobile phones cause brain cancer?

In 2011, for example, the International Agency for Research on Cancer IARC classified mobile phone radiation as a possible human carcinogen, group 2B.

A study by the European Union-funded INTERPHONE group and another led by L. Hardell, a Swedish epidemiologist, showed an increased risk 40-170% of developing glioma, a malignant brain cancer, in people who used a mobile phone for 30 minutes a day over ten years.

And an animal study in 2015 showed cell phone radiation enhanced the carcinogenic effects of chemicals.

This evidence indicates that mobile phone radiation might indeed be "possibly carcinogenic" IARC's group 2B or even "probably carcinogenic" IARC's group 2A to humans.

IARC classifies agents as carcinogenic group 1 , probably carcinogenic group 2A , possibly carcinogenic group 2B , not classifiable as carcinogen group 3 , probably not carcinogenic group 4 .
