The good thing about the Google Pixel Slate is its processor choices — $599 gets you in the door with a Celeron processor, while spending more gets you beefier processors.

The bad news is that the Celeron variant hasn’t been available since, well, not long after the Pixel Slate’s October 2018 launch.

Keep in mind that the Celeron version — the version that costs $599 to $699 with different RAM and storage amounts — is only available on the Google Store.

Best Buy and Amazon also offer the Pixel Slate and sell the $799 Core m3, $999 Core i5, and $1,599 Core i7 versions.

Amid the Kaby Lake noise this week, Intel slipped out six processors, codenamed Apollo Lake, for cheapo netbooks, tablet-laptop mutants and small PC boxes.

These are 14nm low-power system-on-chips that use the x86 Goldmont architecture, and are branded Pentiums and Celerons.

In April, Intel axed its Goldmont-based Broxton Atoms that were due to go into smartphones, and separately canned the Goldmont-powered Willow Trail Atom line that was aimed at tablets – but it allowed the netbook-friendly Apollo Lake family to live on.

Therefore, here are the Goldmont-Apollo Lake survivors:

The Pentium J4205, Celeron J3455 and Celeron J3355 are aimed at desktops, while the Pentium N4200, Celeron N3450 and Celeron N3350 are aimed at slabtops and netbooks.

All of them have 2MB of cache, six PCIe 2 lanes, 12 to 18 GPU execution units depending on the model, LPDDR3 and LPDDR4 interfaces, and hardware decoding for H.264, HEVC, VP9, VC-1 and WMV9.

After rebranding its seventh-generation Pentium processors as “Pentium Gold” in October, Intel is now delivering new post-Atom Pentium Silver and Celeron “Gemini Lake” chips to the PC market.

They are based on Intel’s Goldmont Plus processor core architecture designed for maximum power performance using the lowest amount of energy possible, aka Ultra Low Power, extending battery life.

These chips will be used in tablets, ultra-slim notebooks, all-in-ones, 2-in-1 devices, and entry-level PCs early in 2018.

That said, you can get an idea of what Intel is doing by adding color to the Pentium branding: Painting chips based on its performance architecture with gold, and using silver for its “cost-optimized” low-power models.

Either way, Pentiums (and Celerons) won’t reach into Core-branded performance numbers, but at least now you can get a feel for what the Pentium processors bring to the table.

The new chips are based on the Gemini Lake architecture (Intel's successor to 2016's Atom-derived Apollo Lake) and will be largely aimed at low-cost markets like budget PCs, 2-in-1 tablets, and data entry boxes that don't require much muscle.

In short, these aren't the chips you're going to drop into a high-end gaming rig; that's what the Kaby Lake Pentium Gold CPUs are for.

The Gemini chips will be offered in five SKUs, the Pentium Silver N5000 (mobile) and J5005 (desktop), and the Celeron N4100 and N4000 (mobile) and J4105 and J4005 (desktop) chips.

In addition to a low cost and longer battery life, the Gemini Lake chips will sport integrated 802.11 B, G and N networking, letting them take advantage of gigabit Wi-Fi setups where available.

They will also use Intel's UHD integrated graphics hardware.

The chips are now shipping to OEMs and Intel said it expects the first machines to hit the market in early 2018.

Intel's presentation on the new architecture says that usage will "span client, IoT, and datacenter products."

It's a little too early for a laundry list of the actual devices that will be powered by Tremont, but we do know that the new dual-screened Surface Neo is among them; its Lakefield hybrid processor uses both high-powered Ice Lake and low-powered Tremont cores.

Tremont is the successor to last year's Goldmont Plus, and Goldmont and Silvermont before it.

These are the lowest-powered (and frequently, least expensive) CPUs in Intel's lineup, and consumers will generally be more familiar with them by names like Celeron and Pentium N. You could occasionally find Celeron or Pentium N processors in extremely low-end retail generic Windows PCs, but they were more frequently seen in specialty items like the bare Linux router build we showed off back in 2016.

Pentium N and Celeron were generally well received—but then there was the Atom.

Intel CPUs branded with the Atom name have traditionally been on the extreme low end in both power consumption and processing performance.

The Gigabyte GA-SBCAP3350 Rev 1.0, first spotted by silent-computing specialist FanlessTech, isn't quite the single-board computer (SBC) Gigabyte's nomenclature would suggests.

While it's true that the processor, Intel's Celeron N3350, is permanently soldered onto the board, the design lacks integrated memory and storage.

The former is added by the user in the form of a single DDR3L SO-DIMM board, while the latter is added through two on-board SATA 6Gb/s connectors or a mini-PCI Express (mini-PCIe) slot supporting mSATA storage devices.

A second mini-PCIe slot provides connectivity for a half-length add-in card, with Wi-Fi its primary target.

The dual-core dual-thread (2c/2t) Celeron chip at the heart of the design runs at 1.1GHz base and 2.4GHz burst frequencies - though Gigabyte's initial specifications page for the product incorrectly lists it as a quad-core 1.6GHz part - while the single memory slot supports up to 8GB of DDR3L running at up to 1,866MHz.

The Celeron's Intel HD Graphics 500 integrated graphics processor (IGP) runs at 200MHz base and 650MHz burst clocks, and links to on-board D-Sub and HDMI video outputs supporting resolutions of 1,920x1,200 at 60Hz and 3,840x2,160 at 30Hz respectively.

Amid the Kaby Lake noise this week, Intel slipped out six processors, codenamed Apollo Lake, for cheapo netbooks, tablet-laptop mutants and small PC boxes.

These are 14nm low-power system-on-chips that use the x86 Goldmont architecture, and are branded Pentiums and Celerons.

In April, Intel axed its Goldmont-based Broxton Atoms that were due to go into smartphones, and separately canned the Goldmont-powered Willow Trail Atom line that was aimed at tablets – but it allowed the netbook-friendly Apollo Lake family to live on.

Therefore, here are the Goldmont-Apollo Lake survivors:

The Pentium J4205, Celeron J3455 and Celeron J3355 are aimed at desktops, while the Pentium N4200, Celeron N3450 and Celeron N3350 are aimed at slabtops and netbooks.

All of them have 2MB of cache, six PCIe 2 lanes, 12 to 18 GPU execution units depending on the model, LPDDR3 and LPDDR4 interfaces, and hardware decoding for H.264, HEVC, VP9, VC-1 and WMV9.

The new chips are based on the Gemini Lake architecture (Intel's successor to 2016's Atom-derived Apollo Lake) and will be largely aimed at low-cost markets like budget PCs, 2-in-1 tablets, and data entry boxes that don't require much muscle.

In short, these aren't the chips you're going to drop into a high-end gaming rig; that's what the Kaby Lake Pentium Gold CPUs are for.

The Gemini chips will be offered in five SKUs, the Pentium Silver N5000 (mobile) and J5005 (desktop), and the Celeron N4100 and N4000 (mobile) and J4105 and J4005 (desktop) chips.

In addition to a low cost and longer battery life, the Gemini Lake chips will sport integrated 802.11 B, G and N networking, letting them take advantage of gigabit Wi-Fi setups where available.

They will also use Intel's UHD integrated graphics hardware.

The chips are now shipping to OEMs and Intel said it expects the first machines to hit the market in early 2018.

Intel's presentation on the new architecture says that usage will "span client, IoT, and datacenter products."

It's a little too early for a laundry list of the actual devices that will be powered by Tremont, but we do know that the new dual-screened Surface Neo is among them; its Lakefield hybrid processor uses both high-powered Ice Lake and low-powered Tremont cores.

Tremont is the successor to last year's Goldmont Plus, and Goldmont and Silvermont before it.

These are the lowest-powered (and frequently, least expensive) CPUs in Intel's lineup, and consumers will generally be more familiar with them by names like Celeron and Pentium N. You could occasionally find Celeron or Pentium N processors in extremely low-end retail generic Windows PCs, but they were more frequently seen in specialty items like the bare Linux router build we showed off back in 2016.

Pentium N and Celeron were generally well received—but then there was the Atom.

Intel CPUs branded with the Atom name have traditionally been on the extreme low end in both power consumption and processing performance.

The Gigabyte GA-SBCAP3350 Rev 1.0, first spotted by silent-computing specialist FanlessTech, isn't quite the single-board computer (SBC) Gigabyte's nomenclature would suggests.

While it's true that the processor, Intel's Celeron N3350, is permanently soldered onto the board, the design lacks integrated memory and storage.

The former is added by the user in the form of a single DDR3L SO-DIMM board, while the latter is added through two on-board SATA 6Gb/s connectors or a mini-PCI Express (mini-PCIe) slot supporting mSATA storage devices.

A second mini-PCIe slot provides connectivity for a half-length add-in card, with Wi-Fi its primary target.

The dual-core dual-thread (2c/2t) Celeron chip at the heart of the design runs at 1.1GHz base and 2.4GHz burst frequencies - though Gigabyte's initial specifications page for the product incorrectly lists it as a quad-core 1.6GHz part - while the single memory slot supports up to 8GB of DDR3L running at up to 1,866MHz.

The Celeron's Intel HD Graphics 500 integrated graphics processor (IGP) runs at 200MHz base and 650MHz burst clocks, and links to on-board D-Sub and HDMI video outputs supporting resolutions of 1,920x1,200 at 60Hz and 3,840x2,160 at 30Hz respectively.
