Ashes of Ariandel is the first of two planned DLC packages for Dark Souls 3.

Dark Souls 3: Ashes of Ariandel

Expansions for FromSoftware s Dark Souls trilogy are regarded as some of the best content in the series.

Although it s the shortest of any expansion in the series thus far, it offers a satisfying blend of lore, boss fights, and exploration that fans love, but fails to shake some of Dark Souls 3 s problems.

Riffing on previous settings such as Dark Souls Painted World of Ariamis and Dark Souls 2 s Eleum Loyce, Ashes of Ariandel takes you through stinging snow and crumbling fortresses.

Meanwhile, the final boss holds a place of honour among the pantheon of SoulsBorne brouhahas.

From Software’s Dark Souls series is among the most influential game trilogies of the last decade, spawning countless imitators – few of which manage to surpass the success of the originals.

If you haven’t played any of the games before and own a current-generation console, you’ll be able to do so when the Dark Souls Trilogy releases this October.

Dark Souls Trilogy bundles the recently released Dark Souls Remastered game with Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin and Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades Edition for $80, and publisher Bandai Namco said in a press release that the three-disc physical version will be released in “limited numbers across the Americas.” All three games include all extra DLC content, so you’ll get the “full” experience.

While Dark Souls Remastered is a full overhaul of the original game for newer consoles and Dark Souls III launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC originally, Dark Souls II is an enhanced port, as the game first released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 back in 2014.

A trailer was released alongside the announcement to get players in the monster-killing mood, and it highlights some of the most iconic moments of the series.

The fight against Ornstein and Sif are both shown, so veteran players can have flashbacks of losing those fights over and over again.

In 2018 it's hard to imagine a world without Dark Souls.

Right now, as I live and breathe, Dark Souls Remastered, an updated version of the original classic, is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Dark Souls, the RPG made by Japanese developer From Software, has attained a cult-like following since its initial release in 2011.

Dark Souls is probably the most important game of the last 20 years.

But few have had a bigger impact on video games as a cultural art form in this millennium.

In 2018 Dark Souls is a feeling, it's a sound, it's an atmosphere.

During The Game Awards on Thursday, December 7, Dark Souls III and Bloodborne developer From Software showed a teaser trailer for its new untitled project.

The video was less than 30 seconds long, but the studio responsible for creating the “Souls-like” genre has cultivated a passionate fanbase that quickly began speculating what the project could be.

We don’t currently have a title, a list of platforms, or even a genre … so just what do we know about From Software’s next game?

It’s a crude and violent machine that appears like it could come from the same school of medieval medicine responsible for skull-drilling, blood-letting, and other sadistic pseudoscience.

Before it does, the screen cuts to black and we are greeted with a tagline, “Shadows die twice.”

It has been nearly three years since the original Bloodborne launched on PlayStation 4, so it would seem appropriate for a sequel to be nearing the finish line.

The Dark Souls series — and its first game in particular — are considered to be among the hardest games of the last decade, with brutal boss fights, an unforgiving checkpoint system, and a complex animation-driven combat system.

But StudioMDHR’s run-and-gun shooter Cuphead gives Dark Souls a run for its money, and the immensely talented team at 64 Bits imagined what the two games would look like combined together.

Specifically, 64 Bits showed what the Dark Souls games would look like if they were animated in the classic style of Cuphead, and the result has us hoping the game becomes a reality in the future.

We see the player attempting to take down Ornstein and Smough using lightning bolt attacks from his fingertips, and Sif, the Great Grey Wolf, transforms from an adorable woodland creature into a vicious beast carrying a sword in its mouth.

Perhaps our favorite boss fight included in the video is High Lord Wolnir from Dark Souls III.

64 Bits even created the game’s bonfires and environments using a top-down perspective similar to Cuphead‘s overworld, as well as chase sequences which utilize an isometric view.

Earlier today, Nintendo surprised us by revealing that Dark Souls: Remastered is coming to the Switch in May.

This is an exciting development for those who own a Switch and have never played Dark Souls before, but if the announcement got you Dark Souls veterans in the mood to give the game another go, then we’ve got some good news for you.

As it turns out, Dark Souls: Remastered isn’t going to be a Switch-only affair.

Shortly after Nintendo revealed Dark Souls: Remastered during this morning’s Direct Mini, publisher Namco Bandai revealed that the game is also coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

As with so many other remasters, this will enhance the game for modern day consoles, giving it a fresh coat of paint while likely leaving much of the core gameplay unchanged.

In fact, From Software revealed today that Dark Souls: Remastered will support 4K, 60fps gameplay on the PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X, and PC.

From Software’s game library is notoriously difficult, with games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne testing players’ will to continue as they’re killed over and over again.

That is why it’s so insane that one Twitch streamer managed to beat the entire Dark Souls series, Bloodborne, and even Demon’s Souls without taking a single hit.

Streamer The Happy Hob has been attempting a perfect “Soulsborne” run for months after previously managing to beat the original Dark Souls without getting hit.

Back in February, his glory was cut short on the final game of his marathon — Demon’s Souls — and he was forced to start the entire series over again.

Changing up the game order for his successful 16-hour playthrough, The Happy Hob completed Bloodborne, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls, and Dark Souls 3 without getting hit a single time.

His winning moment is captured in the video clip above, as his strikes the final blow to the Soul of Cinder and cheers triumphantly.

Despite my love of Dark Souls III and Bloodborne, my experience with the original Dark Souls was brief and unpleasant.

I attempted to play the opening hour of the game on PC back in college, but I found the combat sluggish and the difficulty daunting.

Dark Souls Remastered launched on consoles and PC in May, and with my love of Soulslikes firmly cemented, I decided to give the game another chance.

What a difference experience makes!

The first boss fight with the Asylum Demon was a piece of cake, and though rolling and dodging are far less useful on Dark Souls than they are in Dark Souls III, Bloodborne, or even The Surge, I became accustomed to the stand-your-grand combat style of the original.

There’s a complete lack of hand-holding once you complete the tutorial area.

Nintendo is very unlikely to ever stray into grim territory, so mashup videos like this are the closest we'll ever get to that sort of experience.

If there are two game series that are diametrically opposite it’s Mario and Dark Souls.

One offers family friendly fun in a colorful and cartoonish environment, while the other has you battling through a grim and dangerous world of undead and demonic monsters.

YouTuber JellyElite, however, has answered a pertinent question: what if you blended both worlds together?

JellyElite even figured out a thematic way to do it.

One of the more intriguing new features of the upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive, Mario Odyssey, is that his hat, Cappy, now has a mind of its own.

When it comes to playing Dark Souls 3, one of the hardest games ever made, I ve come to realize I have but one real skill — dying.

I ve perfected this skill into more of an art form after amassing some 30 hours on the game so far, a block of time that would undoubtedly double or triple if it weren t for my penchant for rage quitting this game that s at the same time amazing and infuriating.

While I struggle to play the game at all, Celestrian Games, a YouTuber with a penchant for making the rest of us look like chumps at Dark Soles Souls, just upped the ante by beating the entire game with his feet.

Of course, no feet feat of this magnitude would be complete without accompanying video proof, which he s graciously provided.

Dark Souls players are cut from a different cloth, and Celestrian Games is by no means the first time they ve attempted to beat the game using methods that are, well, unorthodox.

This YouTuber beat the game with the drums from Donkey Konga and another did it with the entire game flipped upside down, but still, it s hard to argue that playing and beating the entire game with the limited dexterity of one s foot doesn t take the cake in this ever-odd battle of one-upmanship.

Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment released a Dark Souls III trailer giving fans an early look at the upcoming Ashes of Ariandel expansion prior to its multiplatform launch in October.

Wednesday s trailer gives an overview of the harsh arctic environments featured in Ashes of Ariandel and also offers a glimpse at the new enemies, creatures, and bosses players will encounter throughout the game.

Released for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows PCs earlier this year, Dark Souls III is the final chapter in developer From Software s acclaimed action-RPG series.

Dark Souls III dials up its difficulty significantly compared to previous series entries, which themselves are regarded as extremely difficult and uncompromising experiences.

From Software previously revealed that two downloadable content expansions will premiere for Dark Souls III in the year after its launch, with an initial offering arriving in October.

Titled Ashes of Ariandel, the first Dark Souls III expansion introduces an all-new gameplay area defined by its snow-covered environments and blizzard-like weather conditions that reduce player visibility.

For Nintendo Switch owners, perhaps one of the most exciting announcements of the year so far has been Dark Souls: Remastered.

The Dark Souls series has never had a presence on Nintendo consoles, so this is a big deal for Switch owners.

Unfortunately, the Switch version of Dark Souls: Remastered was delayed at the eleventh hour, and at the time, Bandai Namco didn’t give us a new release date.

Today, the publisher righted that particular wrong, announcing a new release date for Dark Souls: Remastered on Switch.

The game is now set to launch on October 19, 2018 – almost exactly a two months from now.

It’s obviously not as ideal as the game launching on time, but it’s certainly better than it being delayed into 2019.
