The Deus Ex series has never shied away from politically sensitive topics, and the upcoming Mankind Divided s metaphor for racism, which sees augmented humans attacked by society following a series of deadly incidents, is certainly well-intentioned.

However, publisher Square Enix latest marketing stunt may have crossed the line with some fans.

In preparation for the game s launch later this month, a number of images were posted on the official Deus Ex:Mankind Divided website, showing what several major cities may look like in a future filled with augmented humans, or augs, as the game s characters often call them.

Many were unobjectionable, with Paris seeing a massive, twisting silver structure wrapping itself around the Eiffel Tower, and a massive new bridge in Rio De Janeiro looking to make traveling easier than ever.

And then there s the image of Moscow, which you can see above.

A protest between riot-gear-wearing police officers and a group of protesters holding a sign that says Augs Lives Matter.

Perhaps emboldened by the success of Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO, the game publisher is giving the same treatment to another major title: Deus Ex.

Capitalizing on the upcoming launch of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Deus Ex GO will cater to mobile gamers who might not have that much time or resources for a full on Deus Ex game but still want to be immersed in the fictional cyberpunk universe of the game.

Although the earlier installments of the game does allow for more violent gameplay, the game itself is open to many ways of solving a problem, some of which don't involve going on a killing spree.

Visually speaking, Deus Ex GO differentiates itself from both other GO games as well as the main Deus Ex titles, particularly Mankind Divided.

Paths that branch out like circuit lines, triangles, and hexagons all give the game a futuristic, cyberpunk atmosphere.

There is no hard date yet for the launch of Deus Ex GO aside from a Summer target.

More unexpected, however, is the fact we perform the digital archive infiltration as a Ripper, rather than returning protagonist Adam Jensen.

Our short time with Breach didn t earn us any bragging rights, but it certainly satisfied our itch for hacking terminals and shooting bad guys.

Our brief look at Breach provided a fresh, arcade-like take on cracking code, but our time behind the mechanically enhanced Jensen felt familiar in all the best ways.

Of course, the potential rift between Jensen and his peers doesn t stop him from letting the leash off his cybernetic implants.

Behind the controls, we re able to utilize the enhanced eyesight to identify a structural weakness and immediately break through it like peanut brittle.

Unfortunately, a strengthening sand storm also approaches, making it difficult to discern whether it s the whipping wind or the blades of the bad guys helicopter that s compromising our visibility.

The Deus Ex series is known for its flexibility, and Mankind Divided is no different.

There s no one right way to play: whether you want to be a carbon-clad murder machine, a benevolent ghost, or something in between, the game provides the tools to support your chosen style.

Below you ll find our suggestions for augments that you ll want to focus on for various approaches — roughly presented in descending order of importance — along with some more general gameplay tips that can be used regardless of what kind of cyborg you re hoping to become down the line.

Deus Ex pulls from a lot of genres to create its cocktail of action, stealth, and role-playing, but one less obvious influence is Metroid.

So much of the game is about exploring every nook and cranny of the environment and, like in the classic platformer series, many areas will be blocked until you ve unlocked a particular ability.

Getting these as early as possible will save you a lot of backtracking and open up more options for how to approach any situation, especially if you re trying to be discrete.

Instead, it s a role-playing game where you can shoot things.

There s loads to find, learn and manipulate in Adam Jensen s cyberpunk world, so here's some tips to make your adventure a bit more rewarding.

There can be weapons or weapon accessories like silencers, Praxis kits to give you bonus upgrade points, credits for buying new gear, or precious consumables like Biocells and Hypoderms to keep you alive and kicking.

ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SMART VISION

Mankind Divided is absolutely teeming with multiple routes through missions.

You can hack terminals, climb into vents, bypass certain checkpoints, and discover secret passageways through different rooms.

What's your average seaside scene?

Buckets, spades, sandcastles, donkey rides and a 99 Mr Whippy Flake?

What about being sat in the shadows of Blackpool Tower in a refugee camp, polygonal skyscrapers looming above you while something like a Hunter Killer chopper from Terminator swoops overhead?

That's how the artists behind Square Enix's next cyberpunk game Deus Ex: Mankind Divided picture the British seaside resort of Blackpool in the future the year 2029 to be exact , as pictured above.

I can almost hear the claw machines now!

Looking to promote the new transhumanism-focussed game which comes out on August 23rd, and that our buddies over at Kotaku have played extensively already London gets the Bladerunner makeover treatment too:

Note: There are fewer screenshots than usual, which is a result of the fact that all screenshots are promotional, but they are nonetheless representative of what I have played of the game.

That was my initial thought as I came away from my hands-on with the opening hour of the game, a chunk that starts with me waking up in my nice warm bed in a beautiful city and ends with me alone and heavily armed on an alien space station.

What impressed me most was how often the game said yes to me: when I tried to kill myself by hurling myself into the whirling blades of a helicopter rotor in the game's opening; when I tried to nope out of a nightmarish scenario by bashing the nearest window and jumping to safety; or when I got my hands on the game's opening weapon, the goo gun, and decided to use it to build my own personal mountain.

Whether by smart design or some sort of Arkane ability, most solutions I tried to solve the problems encountered during my hands-on worked, and if they didn't work it was often for a valid reason instead of an invisible wall.

There's a detailed skill tree you can use to give yourself hacking skills or lift really heavy objects, so I'm sure as your characters specialises more you'll be able to pull off more unique solutions or get serious regret about your choices when you get stuck outside of an impassable door.

The doomed spaceship you find yourself on for much of Prey feels like you're inhabiting an actual world, something familiar to fans of the immersive sim, a weird meta-genre encompassing classics like Thief, System Shock, and Deus Ex despite their wildly different gameplay.

After playing the opening chapter at preview I was frothing at the mouth with anticipation, excited by all the themes it presented and the plot it could deliver.

The mechanical apartheid – where augmented humans are treated as a subclass of civilisation, bringing a society that s already tense after The Incident to the brink of civil war – seeps into every interaction you have.

My opening hours are spent exploring every side mission I can find.

I m discovering how well thought out and structured the entire hub world is, working my way from story to story, playing detective and making incredibly grey moral choices.

However, unless you run up to every person, taking names, side missions can fall by the wayside despite every intention to see them all.

It helps that each person you speak to delivers dialogue in such a passionate fashion that you want to engage in their stories.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a great game, but going into this review I want you to know, as an absolute, that it's just a few short steps from greatness.

I've been thinking about it pretty solidly for the past week since I've finished it, and I've come to the conclusion that like all great things it has flaws.

The world of Mankind Divided is full to bursting with individuals and objects to interact with; there are emails to read, doors to hack, people to investigate and stores to rob every five minutes.

Although there's only the one hub this time, the anti-aug city of Prague.

By the time the game starts to come to an end, you feel a sense of belonging for the city, and all that exists within it.

This, or at least my desire to look at everything, is the cause for one of the first moments of dissonance in Mankind Divided.

Deus Ex Go players can experience the game from a designer s perspective later this week with the launch of Puzzle Maker, a free level-design toolkit that allows users to build their own custom maps and share them with friends.

The upcoming addition marks the first time that a level editor has been featured in a Go series game, and this week s update fulfills a longstanding request from fans of the cross-franchise mobile puzzler series.

Like its predecessors Hitman Go and Lara Croft Go, Deus Ex Go is a turn-based puzzle game presented in the style of a tabletop board game.

Taking control of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided star Adam Jensen, players must carefully traverse dozens of included levels filled with deadly enemies and hazards.

Though it features gameplay elements from recent Deus Ex series releases for consoles and PCs, Deus Ex Go scales back the experience and repurposes its assets to suit a mobile interface.

Traps and enemies can turn or change position with every step taken, requiring players to adopt a stealthy, measured approach in order to survive each level.

I'm always looking for new smartphone games to keep me occupied on my daily subway commute, so I was excited to get my hands on "Deus Ex Go" a few days ahead of its official release.

"Deus Ex Go" — which is available now for iPhone and Android — is timed with the release of the upcoming action role-playing game "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided," which arrives on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 23.This new mobile game is developed by Square Enix Montreal, which has already made two other games in the "Go" series that are tied to giant gaming franchises: "Hitman Go" and "Lara Croft Go," the latter of which which I recently deemed the best smartphone game I'd ever played. If you've never played any of the "Go" games, they all have the same basic structure: They're tactical, turn-based fare that feel like a modern twist on chess.

Here's what "Deus Ex Go" is like to play.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is the latest release in the long-running franchise, and it s proven more interesting for PC gamers than we d expected.

Though most gamers will probably buy the game for a console, it seems rather stable on PC – and it s gorgeous at maximum settings.

The years that ve passed since its predecessor, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, have been kind to the franchise s unique artistic vision.

But the eye-popping visuals aren t without their demands.

According to our testing, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is the more demanding than any PC game we regularly use for testing – and that includes Crysis 3.

Even a brand-new gaming laptop, with a cutting-edge GTX 1070 mobile GPU, was just short of reaching an average of 60 FPS in the game s benchmark.

The first Deus Ex became a cult classic because of how it bended and blended genres, a daring proposition during its time.

The third installment and the upcoming fourth follow up have revolutionized the franchise, bringing it to current graphics standards and tastes.

And now, they're doing genre bending revolution on mobile.

In the tradition of Hitman GO, Lara Croft GO, but not Pokemon GO, Square Enix has finally released Deus Ex GO for Android and iOS, taking the now familiar puzzle game mechanic and slapping on a futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetic.

with mobile gamers, especially since it offered bite-sized gameplay not exactly conventional on PCs and consoles.

And now, with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided just days away, it is giving the same treatment to the sci-fi franchise.
