Top 10 E3 2015 moments

Another year, another Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Before E3 2016 takes over the news channels over the next four days, let's take one last look at the highs of last year's show.

Between the big name veterans like Microsoft and Sony to the newbies - Bethesda and the PC Gaming Show, all eight conferences had amazing and weird highlights that were both memorable and fun to watch.

Despite no new consoles, we still got to play with the brand new Oculus Rift and observe the world of Halo 5 in augmented reality with HoloLens.

Can we take a moment and say wow because E3 has us excited to turn on our PS4, Xbox One, Wii U and PCs again?

The new trailers and info on Fallout 4, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Doom, Uncharted 4, Star Wars Battlefront and so many more games also only increased our impatience for this fall and next year to arrive faster.

One of the hardest parts of following E3 is keeping track of every announcement, reveal and sneak peek that rolls out during the course of the show.

It takes no time at all to forget about That One Big Game that got you standing up and cheering when it was announced because, well, it's been six months and some of the Other Big Games are hitting store shelves.

This is a list of the games that grabbed our attention during E3 2015, only to fade into the background for the next twelve months, resulting is us going, "Ooohhh yeaaah, I forgot about that," or "Wait a sec, is that still happening?"

when we reflect on last year's showcase.

These projects may be potential vaporware - or just announced a little too early - but they are all due for a check-in at E3 2016, if only so we know that they haven't fallen off the face of the Earth.

Introduction

If E3 2015 was the year of VR hardware, E3 2016 is the year of VR software.

With two of the three major headsets now out, the foundations of gaming's VR-focussed future have been laid.

Virtual reality is a very young medium, and its rulebook has yet to be written, so developers are having to find out for themselves what does and doesn't work when you have a headset strapped to your face.

Given its relative newness it's impressive to see the sheer amount of VR titles present at E3.

It its press conference Sony had perhaps the strongest VR showing yet, and promised that its own PlayStation VR headset would launch with 50 titles supported.

E3 2016 might not yet be over, but we couldn't be more excited about these five VR games from the show.

Based on a concept by Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune and developed by a trans-pacific team including the makers of Metroid Prime, its promise of shooting your way around a strange alien world, fighting bizarre robot menaces and taking their powers for your own ticked all the right boxes.

Exactly how the division of labour fell we can't say, but the game fairly evenly hybridises various systems and mechanics typically favoured in each of those territories - repurposing the detritus of downed robots for crafting purposes creates a very stat-driven RPG element, while real-time combat, shooting, and freedom of movement echo numerous western games.

On release though, it turns out a few boxes weren't ticked.

Set on the distant colony world of Far Eden, you play as engineer Joule Adams.

Awakened from stasis decades late, you now scour the desert world to uncover what went wrong, what happened to the colonists including your father and why the robot drones meant to terraform the planet for humanity's arrival seem to have gone rogue.

Plot specifics are instead delivered through a mix of flashback cutscenes and log entries accessed through the game's menu.

Comparisons between Abzu and 2012's Journey have been drawn since the former first showed off gameplay at E3 2015.

Journey's art director Matt Nava is creative director here, having founded his own studio, and Austin Wintory returns as composer.

Nava departed thatgamecompany in 2013 to start up Giant Squid Studios, with Wintory signing on immediately to provide his proven and celebrated talents.

Since then, they and the rest of the team have been working away at Abzu: an artful underwater adventure very much in the vein of thatgamecompany's Flow, Flower and Journey.

Drawing comparisons between Abzu and these games has been just, and remains so when reviewing the final product.

With the highly anticipated Shenmue 3 on the horizon, wouldn’t it be great to play the original games in glorious high-definition?

If rumors are to be believed, a Shenmue HD Remaster is currently in development with a release scheduled for later this year.

A source close to Atlus USA has told Rice Digital that Sega is planning to release an HD remaster of the first two Shenmue games.

This comes as great news for fans, as currently the only way to play the games are on Dreamcast and the original Xbox.

Last year Sega revealed that it was looking into remastering the original Shenmue games and even registered ShenmueHD.com.

At E3 2015, series creator Yu Suzuki went up on stage during the Sony press conference to reveal the Kickstarter for a potential sequel.

In case you hadn't noticed, E3 has started.

You probably wouldn't have guessed looking at our homepage, but the games industry's biggest event of the year is currently taking place over in Los Angeles.

We've already had the big conferences from Microsoft, EA, and Bethesda, but there's still plenty more to come.

Ubisoft, Square Enix, Sony, Nintendo, and of course the PC-centric PC Gaming Show, which is being put together by our cooperate siblings at PC Gamer.

The show is back to celebrate all things PC gaming, and while it's not going to be as flashy or full of massive AAA announcements like the others, it's proven itself to be a great place for smaller developers to come along and chat about the games they're working on without the pressure of the razzle-dazzle.

This years show will see Sean "Day[9]" Plott return as host, and you can expect plenty of news and footage about games heading to PC over the next 12 months and beyond.

Square Enix and PlatinumGames announced their upcoming action RPG NieR: Automata is set to release on 17 March for PC, two weeks after its release for the PS4.

The game went gold early last month and is already out in Japan since 23 February.

NieR: Automata will release on 7 March in North America and 10 March in Europe for PS4.

Originally announced at E3 2015, NieR: Automata is a follow-up to the original Nier, which released back in 2010 and soon gained a cult following.

Set in a visually stunning, desolate open-world, the sequel follows the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 as they battle to reclaim a "machine-driven dystopia abandoned by humankind and overrun by machine lifeforms.

"Invaders from another world attack without warning, unleashing their secret weapon: the machines," the game's description reads.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands, the latest entry in the tactical shooter series, isn't set for release until March.

However, a beta programme for the multiplayer game will give select players an early taste - if you're lucky.

Wildlands, which sees a US special forces squad known as The Ghosts combatting the Santa Blanca drug cartel in Bolivia, was revealed at E3 2015.

It is the first entry in the series to be set in an open world environment, with a host of vehicles and contemporary military equipment to get to grips with.

The beta will be a good - and for many, necessary - look at how the game marries team-based multiplayer in an open environment.

Brought to you by Coffee Stain studios, Satisfactory is a factory building sim, which puts you on an alien planet to build an autonomous factory.

You’ll power the building of this factory by collecting resources from the surrounding area.

You’ll pick up customers and speak with them in a deeply emotional narrative, where you’ll try to find a friend that has mysteriously vanished.

We don’t know much beyond that, but it was enough to pique our interest.

It wouldn’t be E3 2018 without including at least one Battle Royale game – the PC Gaming Show featured three – and Maverick’s Proving Grounds aims to separate itself from the pack by having gigantic maps with up to 400 concurrent players.

It will also see players leave tracks in the environment, meaning that paying close attention to your environment can lead to victory.

The sequel, which was announced back at E3 2015, is set 15 years after the first Dishonored game that was released in 2012 to critical acclaim.

While Dishonored 2 will bring players back to the dingy streets of Dunwall, most of the game will take place in a new setting called Karnaca - a gorgeous Mediterranean-style metropolis referred to as the "jewel of the South."

"Our approach to world creation is layered.

Emily will show off a host of new powers including 'Domino,' which can link several targets together, allowing players to deliver some crafty multiple kills in one go.

Her "Shadow Walk" ability will allow her to transform into a shadowform and sneak towards an enemy undetected before taking out her target.

"But this time we've put a greater emphasis on big, interesting mission themes – either from a gameplay or a fiction standpoint – making each mission a wildly unique place to explore," Smith said.

For a start, the PS4's parallelogram form is small and sleek in comparison to the enormous VCR-like cuboid of the Xbox One.

You could also pick it up in PSOne grey for a limited amount of time, but that didn't end so well...

All of these features can be found sporadically throughout the new PlayStation Dynamic Menu, the primary GUI of the PS4.

It's extremely convenient, and a great money saver since you can use earbuds or whatever else you already own.

Each controller has a light bar that glows one of four colors: blue, red, green or purple.

Plus also gets you 1GB of cloud storage for your saved games.

For the next few days, a majority of those games are being sold at a massive discount on the Xbox Store in what Microsoft is calling the Backward Compatibility Super Sale.

Hundreds of games — up to 75% off.

The sale began on Tuesday, May 16th and will last through Monday, May 22nd.

If you’re looking to expand your Xbox One library, this is a perfect opportunity to do so, because Microsoft didn’t scrape the bottom of the barrel for this sale.

The Internet was abuzz with rumor and speculation prior to today s Sony PlayStation 4 event that BioWare might sneak in with some surprise information about the next game in the Mass Effect series, Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Since formally announcing the game way back at E3 2015, Bioware has played things very close to the vest—in spite of a few teases since, there are few concrete details on the game s plot or the characters.

The rumors proved right: BioWare General Manager Aaryn Flynn took the stage and showed us a three-minute video that included a bit of gameplay and a bit of exploration—in addition to announcing that the game will take advantage of the Playstation Pro's 4K and HDR capabilities as will FIFA 17 and Battlefield One .

"You'll be totally immersed in Andromeda," he said to the crowd, "discovering all new alien worlds, brought to life with sharper graphics and high dynamic range lighting.

We're also able to create more lifelike characters, which will continue to allow you to experience the best stories you can play."

We already know that Mass Effect: Andromeda takes place in the Helios Cluster, a region of space located in the distant Andromeda galaxy.

A new trailer for Ubisoft s Ghost Recon Wildlands has been released, shedding new light on the game that closed out the company s E3 2015 press conference.

The trailer gives the game a very Mad Max meets Just Cause meets The Division vibe, as we see a squad of soldiers walking, driving and flying across different terrains, before seeing the action really kick off in a series of different enemy strongholds.

There is still no official release date for Wildlands, but the game is set to launch on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The trailer reveals that people who pre-order the game from Uplay will get a bonus in-game mission.

With E3 2016 right around the corner, we can expect to see much more from the game during Ubisoft s press conference.

Let us know in the comments.
