Late last year Audi announced its departure from the FIA World Endurance Championship in favor of the all-electric FIA Formula E racing series.

Now, we're getting our first look at the car it will run under the Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler name.

The Audi e-tron FE04 is the automaker's first all-electric racecar.

It had already worked with Team ABT Schaeffler in the past, but this marks the automaker's first foray into Formula E with its own works team.

The team's two drivers will be Lucas di Grassi, last year's champion, and Daniel Abt.

Allan McNish will oversee Audi's efforts as team principal.

When BMW announced the end of the 6 Series, its departure also meant the end of the M6's participation in racing.

The new 8 Series will replace it both on the road and the track, and its racecar variant is looking good.

The BMW M8 GTE gives us a look at the next generation of BMW's racecar.

This car will hit the track before the 8 Series goes on sale at dealerships, which should help boost demand.

It will participate in the next season of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Yes, that includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Porsche has been the dominant force at Le Mans for the past three years, but its winning streak is over sooner than expected.

Porsche is indelibly linked with the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The German sports-car maker has won the iconic French race a record 19 times.

In a major change of strategy, Porsche will downsize its Le Mans program, and join the Formula E electric racing series beginning in 2019.

But it will continue to race in the GT classes for production-based cars with its 911 at Le Mans, as well as the rest of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Porsche’s move is both shocking and predictable.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans and McLaren.

But they could help each other out of that trouble.

McLaren is open to returning to Le Mans in the top LMP1 class, but only if certain rule changes are made, boss Zak Brown said in a recent interview with Motorsport.com.

Besides being one of the biggest racing stories of the decade, a McLaren Le Mans renaissance could help both parties.

Current rules for Le Mans and the race series it’s attached to, the FIA World Endurance Championship, are “unviable,” he said.

Brown wants to see a cost cap of $20 million, claiming current LMP1 cars don’t offer enough performance to justify the outrageous amounts of money being spent on them.

This is the car BMW plans to take on the 24 Hours of Le Mans with, marking its return to the famous race after seven years.

The road-going version hasn’t seen the light of day yet, but BMW is already preparing a racing version of its M8 coupe.

Christened the M8 GTE, this race car just completed its first round of testing at the Lausitzring in Germany.

The “GTE” designation corresponds to the top class for production-based cars in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

This series includes the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, the main reason for developing the M8 GTE.

BMW will return to Le Mans in 2018, ending a seven-year absence.

Porsche gave London commuters quite a surprise when it unleashed one of its Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid race cars onto the streets of the British capital.

The car was driven by Mark Webber, the ex-Formula One driver who won the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship in a 919.

The drive took place early in the morning on public streets, meaning other cars shared the road with the high-tech hybrid.

Webber, who hails from Australia, got to do quite a bit of sightseeing.

The route took him from Park Lane to the River Thames, past London landmarks like Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Parliament, and the London Eye.

The 919 isn t exactly built for city traffic, but the stunt seems to have gone off without a hitch.

It has not been a good year for the top prototype class of the World Endurance Championship.

First, Audi announced its departure in favor of the all-electric Formula E series.

Now, Porsche's gone and done the same.

Porsche announced Friday that it would abandon its LMP1 prototype-class efforts in the FIA World Endurance Championship in favor of fielding a team in FIA Formula E, starting in the 2019 season.

The automaker has already started work on its own car for Formula E.

"Entering Formula E and achieving success in this category are the logical outcomes of our Mission E. The growing freedom for in-house technology developments makes Formula E attractive to us," said Michael Steiner, board member of Porsche AG, in a statement.

After its shocking withdrawal from the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi is showing that it still has interest in motor sports.

In the wake of the Volkswagen diesel scandal and a streak of uncompetitiveness, Audi shuttered its highly successful FIA World Endurance Championship racing program at the end of last season.

But the Germany luxury automaker isn t completely done with racing.

Audi previously said it would focus on the Formula E race series for electric cars, and maintain a presence in the German DTM race series, but its continued participation in the FIA World Rallycross Championship was in doubt.

The carmaker now says it will stick with World Rallycross, backing the Swedish EKS team.

Rallycross is a different animal from the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race Audi previously dominated.

As rival and fellow Volkswagen Group property Audi bows out, Porsche is celebrating winning both the manufacturers and drivers titles in the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship WEC .

This is the second year in a row that Porsche has won both titles.

At the season finale in Bahrain, the drivers of the number 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid — Romain Dumas, Marc Lieb, and Neel Jani because of the long races, each car gets multiple drivers — were named drivers champions.

Their car actually finished sixth, but the competing Toyota drivers failed to finish high enough to secure the championship.

Porsche secured the manufacturers title at the previous race, in Shanghai.

The Bahrain race marked the end of Audi s 18 years in endurance racing, which gave it a tally of 24 Hours of Le Mans wins second only to Porsche.

BMW likes to tout its motor sports pedigree, but since 2011 the German automaker has been absent from one of racing s biggest stages: the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

But BMW is planning a comeback.

It will enter the FIA World Endurance Championship WEC , the race series that includes Le Mans, in 2018, and will race in the GTE class for production-based cars.

That means BMW won t compete for an overall Le Mans win, but it will rub fenders with the same cars it competes with in showrooms.

The GTE class includes the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Ferrari 488, and Ford GT which won the class at Le Mans this year .

Using race cars based on road cars makes the class more relevant to fans than the top LMP1 prototype class.

At the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Aston Martin announced AMR, its answer to performance sub-brands like BMW M and Mercedes-AMG.

It showed a couple of AMR concepts at Geneva, but is only now revealing the first production model.

That would be the Vantage AMR, which Aston says represents the lower of two “tiers” of AMR models it plans to offer.

While the Vantage AMR features some upgrades and special features, Aston is also planning a line of AMR Pro models with more extensive modifications.

Aston views the AMR sub-brand as a celebration of its racing exploits, so among the options for the Vantage AMR is a paint scheme inspired by a championship-winning car.

Give an electric car its freedom and it’ll pay you back double in broken speed records and acts of excess.

At least, that seems to be Porsche’s recipe for success with the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, its former Le Mans car that, race-mandated limiters removed, has been demonstrating just what joys electrification can bring.

The Evo is effectively an unshackled Porsche 919 Hybrid, the car with which the automaker won the Le Mans 24 Hours race along with the FIA World Endurance Championship three years in a row.

Impressive enough, but thanks to race restrictions the car wasn’t able to show exactly what it could do.

Exhaust gases are still used to recuperate energy, together with regenerative braking, which is stored in a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack.

However the WEC-mandated fuel flow meter – which limits the amount of gasoline a race car can slurp – was removed.

Only a few people will ever get the chance to pilot an FIA World Endurance Championship LMP1-H race car around Belgium’s legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, but thanks to modern technology, the rest of us can least go along for the ride.

This onboard footage was taken from the number 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid at last weekend’s WEC race, with Earl Bamber at the wheel.

The lap was recorded during a practice session for the six-hour race held on Saturday, May 6.

Bamber and teammates Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley brought the number 2 car home third, after losing time due to a tire puncture.

The race started off well for Porsche, but the German automaker’s fortunes gradually deteriorated.

The number 1 919 Hybrid qualified on pole, with drivers Neel Jani and Andre Lotterer achieving a combined lap average of 1:54.097.

With Volkswagen Group cousin Audi out, Porsche is now the dominant force in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and its signature race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Porsche won the legendary endurance race in 2016 and 2015, and is looking to extend that streak this year with its upgraded 919 Hybrid.

Unveiled at the Monza racetrack ahead of preseason testing, Porsche says the 2017 version of the 919 Hybrid is “60 to 70 percent” different from its 2016 counterpart.

The big changes are in the area of aerodynamics.

A new front end, rear air intakes, and other tweaks are meant to compensate for 2017 rule changes that put more restrictions on aerodynamic aids for the top LMP1-class race cars.

While the body may look different, the powertrain remains a hybrid system based around a 2.0-liter turbocharged V4 engine.

It may not have as many fans as NASCAR, and may not have the pedigree of its European cousin, the FIA World Endurance Championship, but the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship represents the pinnacle of road racing in North America.

It features the likes of Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Ford, Lamborghini, and Porsche, but one name has been conspicuously absent.

That will change for the upcoming 2017 season, when Mercedes will partner with the Riley Motorsports team on two AMG GT3 sports cars.

In addition to the factory-backed cars, Mercedes plans to sell race cars to customer teams.

The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is a racing version of the AMG GT road car that made its competition debut in Europe earlier this year.

In place of the road car s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, it uses the old school, naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 from the AMG GT s predecessor, the SLS AMG.
