Understanding them doesn t necessarily mean we can overcome them, but we can be more aware of the effects and—more importantly—try to avoid lacking sleep at all.

Knowing how being tired can affect your choices means you can prepare in advance by taking a nap before a social event or managing your schedule while traveling to make sure you get plenty of sleep.

This list can be a life saver when I m feeling tired and don t really know what I want to cook.

The results have been consistent across swimming, tennis, basketball and football.

It’s common to feel tired after a long day at work or to need a holiday after a month-long sprint to finish a new feature.

To lack enthusiasm about your work.

These are all symptoms of burnout, which is becoming more common as our work lives become busier, more demanding, and more stressful.

In this post I’ll explore what burnout is, what causes it, and how we can overcome it.

Researchers say burnout can be broken down into three parts:

Exhaustion from burnout could lead you to be easily upset, have trouble sleeping, get sick more often, and struggle to concentrate.

Sales of ebooks have dropped dramatically in the UK over the past year, according to figures shared by the Publishers Association.

While book sales overall were up 7 percent, during 2016 compared to 2015, that was no thanks to ebook sales, which were down 3 percent overall.

Physical book sales were up 8 percent.

However, if you look at what is considered "consumer ebooks" – the novels and autobiographies which make up the majority of consumer book purchases (as opposed to, say, educational text books) - they fell a huge 17 percent.

This would suggest a form of "screen fatigue" is kicking in, as readers shift back to printed books as a form of escape from the monitors and smartphones they spend the majority of time on.

A disconnected paper book may represent a welcome reprieve.

Smartmobe shipments were down almost 7 per cent year-on-year in Europe, according to Canalys, as phone fatigue hit mature markets hard.

Some 46 million units were shipped in calendar Q1, including a 13 per cent drop in Western Europe to 30.1 million phones and a 12.9 per cent rise in Central and Eastern Europe to 15.9 million sales.

Punters in the West continued to cling onto their devices for longer and chose more SIM-only deals, plus more shoppers opted for refurbished models.

Canalys said the two biggest losers year-on-year were Samsung and Apple.

Sammy's shipments fell 15.4 per cent across Europe to 15.2 million units, and Apple's sales fell 5.1 per cent to 10.2 million units, despite having a broader range than ever that includes the iPhone SE.

Securitybot sends a Slack message to employees if unusual or potentially malicious activity is detected

Dropbox is aiming to solve the problem of alert fatigue with the release of an open source chatbot called Securitybot, which automatically collects alerts from security monitoring tools and verifies the incidents with employees.

This combats the need for security teams to manually contact employees for verification when someone gains access to a sensitive part of the system, thus enabling them to sort through alerts faster and more efficiently.

Built for Slack, Securitybot is tied into Dropbox s detection and alerting system to speed up the detection process by reducing the number of false positives and immediately escalating confirmed incidents.

The bot looks out for unusual or potentially malicious activity and sends a Slack message to the employee in question if such activity is detected.

The employee is asked to confirm whether they performed the action that triggered the alert and the response is logged for the security team.

A month earlier, Google announced a similar feature called Digital Wellbeing that will be baked into its next version of the Android P operating system.

We break down the features, differences, and benefits of Apple’s Screen Time and Google’s Digital Wellbeing.

This is where you can see a full graph of your phone usage depending on the time, the amount of time your longest session was, and your screen time during Downtime (which we’ll get to later).

To enable it, go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime and toggle it on.

There’s also the ability to set the exact hours for Downtime, which will be applied to all devices signed into iCloud.

There are four main components: Do Not Disturb, App Timer, Dashboard, and Wind Down.

Samsung released its first-quarter results and posted record operating profits.

These profits came in part due to the success of its semiconductor business and the launch of the Galaxy S9.

Samsung expects earning growth to decline going forward, anticipating weak demand for its flagship phones.

Samsung released its first-quarter results earlier today and posted both a 20 percent increase in year-on-year revenue and record operating profits.

Consolidated revenue came in at $56.1 billion (60.56 trillion won), while profits stood at $14.49 billion (15.64 trillion won).

This is the sixth quarter in a row that Samsung has managed to increase its operating profits.

She said smartphone shipments grew by zero percent, the first time since smartphones existed that the market didn’t grow.

And IDC says the smartphone market will remain sluggish into the foreseeable future.

IDC says global shipments (handset units) declined 2.9% in the first quarter.

That means the success of Chinese smartphone makers in Q1 depended entirely on what percentage of their sales were exports versus Chinese domestic sales.

3 spot (after Samsung and Apple), but grew an impressive 18.3% during the quarter, according to Gartner.

When you oversimplify the global market picture, you see Apple rising slowly, and the biggest Chinese companies rising at the expense of Samsung.

At the beginning of a devops transformation, engineers set up as many monitors as they can to catch issues before they happen or to understand when things are happening.

It’s a big problem and finding the balance between making sure everything is captured and not overloading everybody that’s responding to these issues is a key devops transformational issue.

Managers need the right tools and processes to efficiently catch meaningful events and only alerting people when it’s absolutely necessary.

If they’re not putting them at the right thresholds, or not tweaking them the right way it creates a lot of noise, and that’s a very common problem that can be avoided with the right planning architecture.

p Oculus Research, the R arm of the VR company that produces the Rift, announced a new type of “groundbreaking” display that could ease the way current VR works against the nature of our eyes.

The “Focal Surface Display”, as the company is calling it, could put an end to the ‘hangover time’ reported by early VR enthousiasts after extensive use.

The biggest problem stems from the fact that your eyes are not actually seeing a three dimensional object, but a flat surface that uses a simple technique that tricks the brain into thinking it’s seeing 3D.

This trickery puts strain on the brain and leads to things like nausea, headaches and fatigue – hence, the term ‘hangover’.

The official term for the cause is the so-called “vergence-accommodation conflict.” It sounds complicated, but is actually very simple.

Vergence is the term used to describe how you go more cross-eyed when looking at nearby objects, and accommodation is the job your lenses do to properly focus light on your retina for objects at different distances.

People have day jobs, so only grab low-hanging fruit

Bug bounty fatigue means that bounty hunters are only picking up the easy-to-find flaws while leaving more difficult-to-tease-out vulnerabilities undiscovered, according to a security testing organization.

High-Tech Bridge said its mix of automated scanning and manual inspection is unearthing problems at organizations that make use of bug bounty programs.

Companies are starting to experience bug bounty fatigue – when researchers have already found all simple and easily detectable vulnerabilities, and hesitate to spend days and nights searching for more advanced vectors of attacks and exploitations, according to High-Tech Bridge HTB .

In HTB s web security testing practice, nine in ten companies with public or private bug bounty programs have at least two high- or critical-risk vulnerabilities detected in less than three days of professional auditing, and missed by the crowd due to detection and exploitation complexity.

Crowdsourced security testing firm Synack acknowledged HTB had a point about bug bounty fatigue, while still arguing that properly organized and incentivized teams of researchers can look beyond low-hanging fruit to find more obscure flaws.

Gwyneth Paltrow, champion of vaginal eggs, bad lube advice, and honestly too many misguided ideas to keep track of, is now selling vitamins that she says can treat an imaginary disease called “adrenal fatigue.”

The vitamins in question are called “Why am I so effing tired?”, a clever ploy to make you think, hmm, I get tired sometimes, so this supplement must be the answer!

But—I feel like I have to point this out for the robots and aliens in the audience—humans all get tired sometimes, and for a wide variety of reasons.

Inside the packet, you’ll find a pretty standard multivitamin and fish oil supplement, plus some powdered plant material that may or may not do anything.

(Herbal supplements can actually harm your health in some cases, so I’d want to see evidence that these are safe rather than giving Gwyneth the benefit of the doubt.)

There’s no reason to believe any of these things will make you less tired, which brings us back to the question on the label.

Xerox Parc, the legendary research and development center, is probably best known to readers as the research lab that Steve Jobs visited in the late 1970s, getting his first glimpse at the graphical user interface concept he later made famous with the Mac.

But Parc has been involved in plenty of other innovative research projects over the years — and its latest is no different.

Working with flexible hybrid electronics group NextFlex and the University of California, San Diego, Xerox’s Parc development lab has created a smart mouthguard biosensor which can detect early signs of dehydration, exhaustion, and mental engagement levels, based on nothing more than a sample of your saliva.

The sensor is made from electronic plastic foil and is designed to fit into an ordinary mouthguard for use in everything from workouts to military missions.

It does this by analyzing the lactate and glucose naturally found in saliva and is able to send this information to a connected smartphone in close to real time.

“The electrochemical sensor system is fabricated on a small, flexible plastic foil that is mounted on a mouthguard,” David Schwartz, Parc’s manager of Energy Devices and Systems, told Digital Trends.

We feel great when we’re full of energy.

Trump, according to the New Yorker, “considers exercise misguided, arguing that a person, like a battery, is born with a finite amount of energy.” Exercise does use up energy, and yet, after exercise you can feel more energetic than before you started.

If you apply one newton of force to move an object one meter, you have done one joule of work.

Each kilowatt-hour on your electric bill is 3,600,000 joules.

Each “calorie” (really a kilocalorie) in your Snickers bar or your salad is 4,184 joules.

Just like you can talk about the calories or joules in a candy bar, you can talk about the joules in a can of propane or in a log of firewood or in a battery.

Then, in April 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake and avalanche caused nearly 8,500 deaths in Nepal and resulted in 19 fatalities at Mount Everest Base Camp, leading to the cancellation of the climbing season, a choice made on the Tibet side by the Chinese government and by individual teams on the Nepal side.
