Holders of Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) are required to make their innovations available on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

If you’re wondering just how much the high-end gaming-focused smartphone from Asus was going to cost, then you’ll be interested to learn that a Finnish mobile carrier has the handset up for preorder at €999.

The network in question is Telia – as spotted by a Reddit user, via Slashgear – and that price tag would roughly translate to the Asus ROG Phone costing around £895, $1160, or AU$1560.

Of course, the pricing will never be a direct currency translation, but if the mobile network in question has things on the mark, then you’ve got an idea of the ballpark figure you’ll be paying for this gaming smartphone.

Whichever way you dice it, that’s a lot of dough to fork out for a phone, but then there is an increasing trend towards more expensive handsets these days – you only need look at Apple and the iPhone X which also tips the scales at a grand.

Plus the Asus ROG Phone has a chunky spec and some nifty gamer-targeted features, so it was never going to be cheap.

The handset boasts a 1080p AMOLED display with HDR support and a 90Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM, a clocked-up Snapdragon 845 (hitting 2.9GHz, 100MHz faster than normal) and nifty vapor-cooling tech that tackles the heat problems which plague compact gaming devices – and apparently does a very good job as we found in our hands-on.

(Reuters) — Google said it has signed a 10-year deal to buy renewable energy from three new wind farms that are being built in Finland and which will power one of its data centers.

Big companies have rushed to secure cheap renewable energy to manage costs and reduce their carbon footprint through so-called corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs), which allow firms such as Google, owned by Alphabet, Facebook, and Microsoft to buy directly from the energy generator.

Google said on Tuesday that the Finnish deal is the first where it is buying power from European projects that will not receive any government subsidies.

“In a growing number of locations, the cost of new renewable energy is competitive with the cost of power from the grid,” Marc Oman, Google’s head of EU energy, said in a blog.

The combined capacity of the three farms will be 190 megawatts (MW) and will be built by renewable energy developers Neoen of France and Germany’s CPC and WPD.

New wind power installations in Europe dropped by more than a quarter in the first half of 2018 to 4.5 gigawatt (GW), industry association WindEurope data shows, highlighting tighter competition as governments phase out industry support.

If you ever see a Finn staring at his mobile phone, chances are that he’s watching a video.

According to figures from GlobalData, users in Finland churn their way through 13.3GB per SIM every month, nearly six times the European average and more than 18 times the data usage of Slovakia, the least data driven country.

The figures are slightly misleading, however.

Some countries, such as France and the UK have low monthly mobile data figures because of the large numbers of low data-intensive M2M cards that are bringing down the average.

In the UK, for example, average monthly mobile data usage is 1.98GB, but smartphones use up to 2.6GB and connected data devices 2.8GB; only the 291MB of the M2M brings down the average.

Users from all countries are increasingly turning to data, often driven by high usage of video.
