Subaru has rolled out the all-new 2019 Forester SUV at the New York International Auto Show.

The new Forester will land at Subaru dealers around the country later this year.

There are some significant updates to the Forester that Subaru says make it the most capable, versatile, and roomy Forester to date.

One big change is the move to an enhanced direct-injection 182hp 2.5L four for all models.

That four is the Boxer type you expect from Subaru and has auto stop/start technology and is paired with a standard Lineartronic CVT transmission.

All versions of the Forester also have standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

The 2019 Forester doesn't radically shake up Subaru's SUV formula, but it doesn't have to.

Now in its fifth generation, the Forester continues to offer exactly what its buyers want: Lots of interior space, lots of standard safety equipment and rugged charm.

Visually, it's still very much a Forester, with an upright, two-box design, and typically Subaru contemporary-but-offbeat styling.

You know, kinda ugly, but totally charming at the same time.

The 2019 Forester is built on the Japanese automaker's Subaru Global Platform architecture, resulting in an SUV that's slightly larger than before.

Every 2019 Forester will be powered by Subaru's new, direct-injected, 2.5-liter boxer engine, with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque -- gains of 12 hp and 2 lb-ft over the 2018 model.

My very first car was a 1998 Subaru Forester that my brother handed down to me.It wasn't the sexiest car in the world, but it sure was reliable.

I drove it from New York to North Carolina and back again for four years with 80,000 miles already logged, and it always got the job done.So when the opportunity to try the newest Subaru Forester presented itself, I had to get behind the wheel and see if it still presented the same level of comfort, reliability, and driving ease as its nearly 20-year-old predecessor. The Forester is arguably Subaru's most important car.

The crossover was Subaru's best-selling vehicle in the US last year and still holds that title in 2016 so far.

As always with the Forester, the Subaru's main perk is that it's a practical and sturdy ride with all-wheel drive.

But the 2017 model comes with some semi-autonomous features that take it to the next level.

These kinds of steady improvements are important considering how competitive the crossover segment is, with players like the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4.Here's what it's like to drive Subaru's latest Forester: View As:

It's always nice when a new car loads itself up with fresh standard equipment without sending its price tag to the high heavens.

Today, that car is the 2019 Subaru Forester.

The 2019 Subaru Forester will start at $24,295 before destination, a bump of just $500 over last year.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch steel wheels, the Subaru Starlink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the EyeSight suite of driver aids, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning and automatic braking.

The next trim level is the $26,695 Forester Premium, which is also $500 more expensive than last year.

There are also a few orange accents scattered about, including the stitching on the unique-to-Forester-Sport gray seats.

It’s such a shame that Subaru dropped the turbo option from the forester.

My 2016 XT Touring was by far the best deal I could find for number of features and amount of power.

I don’t know what I’ll buy when I upgrade.

One of the nice things (for me at least) about the Forester is it isn’t as aggressively styled as something like the WRX.

Subaru is having a good year.

It's already having trouble meeting demand for its newly refreshed Forester, and the Crosstrek is selling like gangbusters.

Despite that, people are still clamoring for more power in those models, pining for the days of the Forester XT and its turbocharged ilk.

Subaru is giving its recently revealed Legacy a hairdryer under the hood, so why no turbo love for Forester and Crosstrek?

They're already too popular, according to a statement made by Subaru NA's president Tom Doll during an interview with Motor Trend at the recent Chicago Auto Show.

By Doll's reckoning, adding the performance that people are wanting to cars that they're already buying will make the vehicles even harder to get at a dealer.

p Painting trim pieces black is a popular thing to do, especially when it comes to aftermarket modification.

This summer, Subaru will send the 2018 Forester crossover to dealerships.

A $1,150 option for the Premium trim, this Forester adds a number of black-painted pieces, including the wheels, fog light accents, badges, mirrors and grille emblem.

Starting back at the bottom, a base 2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i will run you $22,795.

All-wheel drive is standard, and it comes mated to a 2.5-liter flat-four good for 170 horsepower.

A six-speed manual is optional on just the 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models -- everything else will make do with a CVT.

And while this compact SUV has humbler origins than the rally-bred WRX sedan, it benefits from the development of the company s most sport-oriented model in a number of ways, a strategy that s been expanded upon even further for the Forester 2.0XT s refresh for 2017.

We grabbed the keys to this turbocharged, CVT-equipped example and braved the slightly damp elements to see how the newly revised Forester currently stacks up.

While the 2017 Subaru Forester 2.0XT is powered by the same turbocharged, 250 horsepower four cylinder mill as the last one we drove a few years ago which we continue to be fans of today , Subaru has sought to keep the Forester fresh with a host of tweaks inside and out that improve on the recipe rather than reinventing it.

While much of it is typical fare for a mid-cycle refresh – updated looks by way of a revised front and rear fascias, new interior trim options and different wheel designs – this top-spec 2.0XT Touring has a few technological tricks up its sleeve that help set the Forester apart from other entries in its competitive set.

The technology is bundled in with the latest version of the optional EyeSight driver assistance package, Subaru s active safety suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane keep assist, and pre-collision braking features.

Plucked from the WRX, the gutsy mill manages to work around much of the shortcomings of Subaru s CVT automatic gearbox, and steering wheel-mounted shift paddles provide legitimate function for quick overtakes without the need to wait for the CVT s software to figure out what to do.

This year at the New York Auto Show, we were shown updated versions of two of the world's favorite crossover SUVs: the 2019 Toyota RAV4 and 2019 Subaru Forester.

While they both attempt to do the same thing, they go about it in different ways, so let's see how they stack up against each other -- and two of their competitors, the Nissan Rogue and the Honda CR-V.

This is a subjective category of course, but all four vehicles have something going for them.

The new Toyota RAV4, particularly in Adventure trim, has a newfound aggression and masculinity in its styling that is really refreshing.

At the end of the day, the new Forester still looks like a Forester, and for Subaru fans, that's a good thing.

The Honda CR-V is a seriously heavy hitter in the compact SUV segment and represents the RAV4's biggest competitor.
