Today Google announced that it has sold 25 million Chromecasts, the company s cheap streaming dongles that let you send music, photos, and videos from your phone to a TV or an external speaker.

That s 25 million units sold since 2013.We last heard about Chromecast in September, when Google announced it had sold 20 million units and unveiled its first major updates to the product line: Chromecast 2 and Chromecast Audio. It s hard to weigh whether the 25 million unit milestone is actually a big deal or not, as Chromecast doesn t really have a noteworthy direct competitor — similar offerings from Apple and Amazon are pricier and don t really do the same things.

For reference, Apple TV hit 25 million units sold back in January 2015.

Google has begun to build its own custom application-specific integrated circuit ASIC chip called tensor processing units TPUs , Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said today at the Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California.

The name is inspired by Google s TensorFlow open source deep learning framework.

When you use the Google Cloud Platform, you can take advantage of TPUs as well, Pichai said.Specialty hardware — sort of taking a cue from the holographic processing unit HPU inside Microsoft s HoloLens augmented reality headset — will not be the only thing that will make the Google public cloud stand out from market leader Amazon Web Services AWS .Also, over time Google will expose more and more machine learning APIs, Pichai said.

Our goal is to lead the industry on machine learning and make that innovation available to our customers, Google distinguished hardware engineer Norm Jouppi wrote in a blog post.

Building TPUs into our infrastructure stack will allow us to bring the power of Google to developers across software like TensorFlow and Cloud Machine Learning with advanced acceleration capabilities.

Machine Learning is transforming how developers build intelligent applications that benefit customers and consumers, and we re excited to see the possibilities come to life.

Google, not being particularly amenable to letting other robots into your life has unveiled its own version, Home.

Just by speaking, you can order an Uber, play Spotify, set alarms or just ask questions.

Duo, meanwhile, is quite simply Google's answer to FaceTime or Skype, allowing internet video calls.

Both are coming for iOS and Android in the summer.

Google's next software operating system update for smartphones and tablets, codenamed Android N, has been released as a developer preview

The new system will be named after a tasty treat, and could be called Nerds, Nutella or Nougat

New features include split-app multitasking, the ability to reply to messages from within a notification and increased battery efficiency

Google has been dipping its toes in low-end VR with Google Cardboard for a couple of years, but is stepping up by bringing it to Android N.

A new feature called Daydream will allow certain phones to up their performance to deliver VR, and Google is releasing a Play Store, Street View and YouTube for VR.

Google is also thinking beyond the limitations of Cardboard, and has produced a blueprint for a headset which it will share with third-parties, alongside a natty little controller reminiscent of the Siri-powered pointer Apple unveiled alongside the latest Apple TV last year.

Ellie Powers, Google Play s lead product manager, showed off improvements to how beta programs work, benchmarks, a new pre-launch report, and a slew of minor improvements.Google Play has over 1 billion monthly active users, which the company argues makes it the world s largest app distribution platform.

But Google also shared a new number today: Last year, Google Play users installed apps 65 billion times.

That number is up from 50 billion in 2014, or a 30 percent increase.Google wants to keep that figure rising, so it implemented the following list of features to help developers grow their apps and games:Speaking of apps, Google Play has gained two of its own.

If you are already using Android Studio, you can check for Canary updates in the navigation menu Help Check for Update on Windows/Linux and Android Studio Check for Updates on OS X .Google released Android Studio 2.1 just three weeks ago, so this preview is coming very soon out of the pipe.

And yet Stephanie Cuthbertson, Google product manager for Android, showed a long list of features that 2.2 brings to the table:On stage, Cuthbertson also shared that 94 percent of the top 125 apps and games in Google Play now use Android Studio.

Not bad for an IDE that only launched back in December 2014.

Well, it turns the rumor was half-correct: It s more of a suggestion box than a poll.

Google wants to hear your what you ve got at android.com/n.On stage at I/O 2016, Dave Burke, vice president of engineering for Android, said Google reserves the right to choose the final name.

So the name for Android N won t be chosen based on your vote, per se, but your submissions will be taken into consideration.

Yeah, Google loves the Web and all, but it s not about to let crowdsourcing handle its marketing.Since Android 1.5, Google has named each version of its mobile operating system after a sweet food — moving sequentially through the letters of the alphabet.

The tradition started more than six years ago.

A Google Opinion Rewards survey from March included these options: Napoleon, Nut brittle, Nachos, Nori, Noodles, Nougat, and Neapolitan ice cream.I m stubbornly holding out for Android Nutella, despite the trademarking work it would require.

Google today unveiled Android Wear 2.0, which the company is calling the most significant update to Android Wear since the platform launched over two years ago.

Android Wear product manager Jeff Chang promised there would be multiple previews over the summer, with the final release to users slated for the fall.Android Wear 2.0 brings a slew of improvements for both developers and users.

It covers the new navigation drawer swipe down in an app and action drawer swipe up in an app components in the Wearable support library and guidance on adopting the new dark color palette.Android Wear apps will now finally be able to access the Internet directly over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular.

Yes, that means they don t need to rely on the Data Layer APIs, meaning they no longer require your phone. If this sounds familiar, you re probably remembering the Android Wear update in April 2015 that let you get notifications, send messages, and use apps as long as your smartwatch was online.

As a result, developers can now even create their own custom input methods.Last but not least, messages have a new notification template, which is also available on phones and tablets using Android N. The template s layout is supposedly optimized for quick and responsive messaging, as Google has found that this is the app type that is used the most on watches. It s now easier to develop apps that use fitness data and detect activity.

That includes Data Saver, Java 8 Lambda support, and emojis. The new Android N developer preview also launched today at I/O 2016, and you can read about features that arrived in the first two previews here and here.Singleton expects the vast majority of Android Wear watches will eventually get Android Wear 2.0.

Rumors that Google would merge Android and Chrome OS, or even just outright kill Chrome OS, have been coming and going for years.

At its I/O 2016 developer conference, the company finally unveiled its grand plan: Android and Chrome OS aren t merging yet?

, but their best features, respectively, are being ported over.Late last year, when the Android and Chrome OS merging rumor resurfaced once again, I said there was only one feature that Google needed to bring from Chrome OS to Android, and that s exactly what happened.

In short, devices running Android N or greater will be able to install system updates in the background.

Instead, Google is bringing it to Chrome OS/Android.Both features are coming later this year, and it s certainly possible that key components will change.

Still, we finally have a proper understanding of Google s vision: Instead of merging Android and Chrome OS, or maybe before doing so, it s bringing them closer together. The two could still merge someday.

NetEase is one of the first major game companies to commit support for Google s new virtual reality initiative. The Chinese publisher and developer announced that it is making a game for Daydream, Google s new mobile VR platform that it talked about at Google I/O event today.

The title is Twilight Pioneers, an action role-playing game with a fantasy setting.

As one of the first developers globally to feature on Google I/O 2016, we are pleased to be among the first companies to commit to making games for Daydream, NetEase chief executive officer and director William Ding noted in a press release.

Leveraging our track record in game development and innovation, we are confident of delivering the superior VR gaming experience to players in China and around the world.

NetEase has previously worked on mobile games like Chrono Blade and a licensed app based on the movie Kung Fu Panda 3.

It also runs many of Blizzard s games, including Hearthstone, in China.NetEase opened a U.S. division earlier last year to release games in North America, starting with Speedy Ninja for mobile.

The factory images should arrive shortly for the supported devices: Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus 9 LTE, Nexus Player, General Mobile 4G, and Pixel C.Google launched the first Android N developer preview in March and the second preview in April.

In past years, Google has unveiled the next Android version and released the accompanying developer preview at its I/O developer conference, but with Android N, the company is starting much earlier — we re at I/O 2016 and the company is already on the third preview. There are two big features the Android team is highlighting in the third preview: seamless updates like in Chrome OS!

The third preview naturally includes everything that inside the first two previews, but these features are being shared for the first time today.Google says that seamless updates are inspired by how Chromebooks apply updates.

The next time you restart your Android phone or tablet, it will boot up using the updated system image.Seamless updates are a huge addition that will have massive implications on the Android ecosystem years down the road.

Developers will be happy to know that VR mode brings performance enhancements, including single buffer rendering and access to an exclusive CPU core.VR mode lets apps take advantage of smooth head-tracking, stereo notifications, and low latency graphics.

Of course, we knew that was the case thanks to Google Cardboard s success, but now the company is baking support and improvements right into its mobile operating system. As you might expect, the new preview also includes a few API changes check out the diff reports and a slew of bug fixes.
