Nvidia today unveiled a new platform for developers of video-conferencing apps, which the company says can cut the bandwidth consumed by video calls by a factor of 10. The cloud-native platform — named Nvidia Maxine — also offers AI effects including gaze correction, super-resolution, noise cancellation, and face relighting. The system slashes the bandwidth requirements of the H264 video compression standard by using AI to analyze the “key facial points” of every person on the call — rather than streaming the entire screen of pixels. The software then reanimates each face in the video on the other side. This compression technique could both…

News: Microsoft says sorry for 'dropping the ball'.

Windows 10 users have been hit by a plague of webcam problems after Microsoft released the Anniversary update for Windows 10.

The update, which was released on August 2, stopped USB webcams using MJPEG or H264 encoded streams, only allowing YUTY2 encoding.

Those trying to use MJPEG or H264 after installing the update have complained that footage cannot be streamed, with video calls and images freezing.

The problems even extended to Skype and Lync, which are companies owned by Microsoft.

Microsoft s support site was inundated with complaints from customers, with a Microsoft camera engineer replying to complaints by saying that the company had done a poor job in letting users know of the changes.

The latest update for Windows 10 is causing issues for users with USB-connected webcams and it may be some weeks before an official fix is out.

The Windows 10 Anniversary update, which was released earlier in August, attempted to adjust the OS settings to allow multiple programs to use the computer s webcam at once.

In an attempt to keep this process smooth, the update disabled the use of MJPEG and H.264 encoded streams for USB-connected webcams, and now only YUY2 encoding is available.

As a result, some users were left unable to stream video through services like Skype or Lync which are Microsoft owned or the image quality would freeze.

The issue is affecting both consumer and enterprise users but there are no official numbers.

In one customer complaint, a business claimed that thousands of its customers can t use its services.

The two new drones, the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom, have identical dimensions and flight specifications (here’s our rundown of all the key features) — the only difference is in the cameras, and it’s pretty significant.

24-48mm, f/2.8 (24mm) f/3.8 (48mm)

MP4 / MOV (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265)

MP4 / MOV (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265)

This is probably the most important difference between the two models.

The 1/2.3-inch sensor in the Mavic 2 Zoom is about what you’d expect to find in a smartphone or entry-level compact camera, whereas the Mavic 2 Pro features a larger 1-inch sensor — the same format popularized by Sony in the RX100 series of advanced compact cameras.

Microsoft s first big Anniversary Update for Windows 10 went live earlier this month.

With it came improved pen performance, new Cortana features, and an all around better Windows.

Two weeks later, it s become clear that the Anniversary update has some big problems.

First, some users were plagued with a system-wide freeze after logging into Windows, and now Paul Thurrott reports that the OS is killing certain webcams.

Without getting into too much technical mumbo jumbo, the problem popped up because Microsoft was actually trying to add new ways for applications to access webcams.

Here s how a Microsoft rep from the camera team describes it in the Windows Dev Center forum:

It's even worse when the culprit is your operating system.

Microsoft s got another Windows 10 Anniversary Update problem to fix following the login freeze issue that came to light in mid-August.

Many users are now complaining that they can no longer use their USB-based webcams since updating to the latest version of Windows 10.

The source of the problem is that Microsoft decided to filter out two common video compression formats for connected webcams in the Anniversary Update, as first reported by Thurrott.com.

Microsoft s reasons for restricting the formats—MJPEG and H.264—were reasonable enough, as explained by Windows Camera Team member Mike M. on Microsoft s developer forums.

The problem with MJPEG is that multiple apps could then decode the stream at the same time, which would reduce system performance unnecessarily.

p MP3 is the file format that changed the whole world beyond the music industry.

It eventually affected the entire entertainment industry, gave Apple a new mandate when PCs were conquering the computing world, and made digital the media to beat.

But now its creators are saying that it is dead.

That, however, is really only a technicality and a legality because MP3s will undoubtedly live one for years to come, even when better alternatives are around.

MP3, short for MPEG-2 Audio Layer III (not MPEG-3) saw its first release in 1993.

Through ups and downs, the format has become the de facto standard in digital music.

Microsoft is scrambling to find a fix for its Windows 10 Anniversary Update after users found out the hard way that the software breaks webcams.

The update has affected millions of USB webcams which use MJPEG or H.264 encoded streams, Thurrott reported.

The company removed those options in a botched attempt to allow different applications to access the camera at once without diminishing video quality.

Now, only YUY2 encoding is supported.

Users have reported that the software is freezing their webcams even when they use Skype, which is owned by Microsoft.

A rep from the Windows Camera Team first apologised on a Microsoft forum for doing a poor job communicating this change out to you guys .

This new, long-term strategy will keep the “golden goose” of Qualcomm licensing chugging along.

Qualcomm is also looking ahead to 5G, with which it stands to become even more profitable.

During the call, via Reuters, Qualcomm admitted that going forward, it will cap the pricing of specific patent licensing deals to make it cheaper for smartphone manufacturers to use Qualcomm technology in their products.

In other words, Qualcomm is ready to make less money from its “golden goose” patent licensing business in order to keep that business churning along.

Most people think of Qualcomm as a chip-making enterprise, since its Snapdragon line of chips is in almost every major flagship smartphone.

However, the bulk of Qualcomm’s money comes from patents it owns that give basic cellular connectivity to smartphones.

The long-awaited Windows 10 anniversary update arrived early this month, bringing a number of new features to Microsoft s latest operating system.

But some users found it introduced a few less welcome changes, such as breaking their USB-connected webcams.

There had been a small number of reports stating that Windows 10 devices were freezing after being updated, but Microsoft has issued a workaround while it investigates the problem.

With the webcam issue, however, the Redmond company hasn t issued a temporary fix.

Anyone experiencing problems may have to wait until Microsoft releases a patch, probably sometime in September.

Microsoft s anniversary update allows multiple Windows 10 applications to use a webcam at the same time.

Adobe has released an Arm version of Premiere Pro for macOS, allowing owners of new Apple Silicon M1 Macs to run the video editing software natively. The program is still very much in beta for now, however, and the Adobe post announcing its availability lists a host of known bugs and missing features. News of its release was spotted by The 8-Bit, and MacRumors adds that Adobe’s Premiere Rush and Audition have also been updated to run on the new machines.

Adobe says it’s porting Premiere Pro’s features over in phases, starting with its core editing functions and workflows, as well as popular codecs like H.264, HEVC, and ProRes. Third-party integrations will need to be updated by their respective developers to work on Apple Silicon. Adobe...

The Nokia logo on a booth at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Feb. 25, 2016.

Nokia has filed new patent infringement lawsuits against Apple on Thursday, a day after it weighed in on a licensing dispute with the company by filing claims in Germany and the U.S.

On Wednesday, the Finland-based mobile network vendor filed lawsuits in three German courts and two lawsuits in a Texas court, leveling infringement claims against Apple on the widely used H.264 video codec and other technologies.

Those suits cover 32 of Nokia s patents.

Nokia s first round of lawsuits came after Apple filed a lawsuit Tuesday accusing Nokia of working with patent assertion firms Acacia Research and Conversant Intellectual Property Management to extract and extort exorbitant revenues unfairly and anticompetitively from Apple and other smartphone makers.

On Thursday, Nokia announced new lawsuits against Apple, with 40 patents covered in the claims filed this week.
