An A-grade dinner party's worth of cultural icons have passed away, the world is still trying to wrap its collective head around Trump and Brexit, and someone shot Harambe.

Its greatest strength is the ebb and flow of every firefight; the feeling of speed and power that comes with each scuffle with a demonic horde.

Here developer id Software harked back to the original Doom in 1993, a time when things didn't feel quite so catastrophically awful, to recapture that game's distinct vibe with fluid combat and great level design.

Watch Dogs 2 - For fighting the establishment with your new best friends

Hackers have always been cool.

Celluloid has been rubbing cool computer whizzkids in our faces since Hackers back in 1995, but in Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft created the first hacker group real or otherwise that I think I'd actually like to hang out with.

Pick up one of the best shooters of 2016 for just £23.99 on PC for a limited time.

Id Software knocked it out of park with its 2016 reboot of Doom, a title so many of us never expected to be this bloody, brutal and brilliant.

As part of the Steam Summer Sale it is now 40% off its regular price alongside a number of other titles.

In our review we scored Bethesda s latest shooter an impressive 8/10, describing it as:

This is the Doom you ve been waiting for, packed with gruesome, unrelenting action, gore and one of the finest monster menageries in gaming.

The reliance on staged arena battles makes for a slightly repetitive campaign, but it s enormous fun in its own brutal way.

Throw in a set of solid multiplayer modes and the intriguing SnapMap option, and you have a Doom that s good enough to restore your faith.

A beta for Bethesda and id Software’s Quake Champions is set to kick off a week from now although given its closed nature, not everyone will get in right away.

Bethesda is now accepting beta sign-ups over on the official Quake Champions website; simply enter your e-mail address and country of residence and confirm that you’re at least 18 years or older to throw your name in the hat.

Quake Champions is thought by many to be id Software’s attempt to make a modern esports title.

Although based off the Quake namesake and gameplay that made Quake III Arena such a great game, Champions can perhaps be best viewed as Quake for the Overwatch era (again, with lots of esports elements mixed in).

id Software on Thursday also unveiled another of the game’s characters, Anarki the Transhuman Punk from Quake III Arena.

For the uninitiated, Anarki is more or less a modern-day version of Michelangelo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (same voice, same personality and yes, he even has a skateboard-like hoverboard).

Steve Nix, former id Software executive and previous CEO of Yvolver, said today that he has started a new Dallas-based virtual reality development studio, ForwardXP.

We are creating interactive content for virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality, he wrote in a post on Facebook.

The focus will be more on experiences, which is what the XP part of our name stands for.

Nix was most recently general manager of VR and interactive at ReelFX.

Before that, he was CEO of Yvolver, a mobile player engagement platform that was acquired by Opera Mediaworks in August 2015.

VR headsets are finally starting to arrive in quantity, and AR/MR will be the next major wave and eventually even larger than VR, Nix said.

Doom is a brilliant shooter, and its free DLC and low price should help to attract even more players.

Id Software’s Doom reboot has been in the wild for a little over a year now, and if you haven’t played it yet, you’re missing out.

The game takes all the fun of annihilating demons and trims out the unnecessary world-building and story.

Luckily, now is the perfect time to pick the shooter up, as Doom‘s latest “6.66” update makes all downloadable content completely free.

“We’ve retired the Doom season pass and are making all of the multiplayer DLC content available to all players,” said game director Marty Stratton in the announcement.

“That’s three multiplayer DLC packs, which include nine of our best maps, three additional guns, three additional playable demons, new equipment, armor sets, and more.”

Back in August last year, we saw the first gameplay trailer for the latest version of id Software’s classic series, Quake.

Following the commercial and critical success of the studio’s other reboot, Doom, the announcement of Quake Champions at E3 2016 wasn’t a huge surprise.

Now, it’s been revealed that the arena shooter will be free-to-play with the option to purchase it outright.

Id Software gave a strong hint last year that Quake Champions would be F2P when it talked about evaluating the game’s business model.

Creative director Tim Willits explained in an interview with Polygon that offering free and traditional options would enable more people to play the game.

“At its core, it’s a free-to-play game with the option to buy the Champion Pack and just get in and play with all the Champions,” said Willits.

You don’t really need an excuse to revisit id Software’s genre-defining FPS game, DOOM – but indie developer Dario Zubovoic’s take on the classic is good enough reason to jump back into the gory shooter for a few rounds.

The twist is that Zubovic’s 1337doom is rendered in ASCII code, meaning that the graphics are all just colored letters, numbers, and symbols, kinda like those cascades of green text in The Matrix – and yes, there’s a monochrome mode too.

Adjusting the difficulty slider simply increases the size of each individual character; the easiest mode keeps them small enough for you to make out the environment and enemies, and it gets harder to discern those elements as the type gets bigger and bigger.

If you want a real challenge, you can set the game to monochrome mode.

It took me several attempts to get past just a few rooms, but I didn’t mind in the least.

The stoner rock soundtrack from Sydney-based band Turtle Skull made the all-too-short rounds surprisingly enjoyable.

Rather than disappoint headset hopefuls with a last-minute delay, the company has gone ahead and announced firm release dates for all three.

None of the games will be available as a free upgrade to owners of existing non-VR versions, by the way.

Bethesda has yet to confirm whether FO4VR will at least include all of the game's existing expansion content in its $60 price tag, and the current Steam listing for the game is coy on that front: "Fallout 4 VR includes the complete core game with all-new combat, crafting, and building systems fully reimagined for virtual reality."

If you can't get to Grapevine's Gaylord Hotel starting this Thursday, you can watch the Quake World Championships all weekend long on sites like Twitch.

The most noticeable update to this year's demo is a "dash, warp, and kill" control suite that we can expect in the game's final version.

Tap any edge of your left wand's touchpad to quick-dash in that direction; hold the touchpad button down to slow time and bring up a "teleport" arrow.

Doom, id Software's reboot of the classic franchise, feels equal parts retro and modern.

A good blend of the old and the new, but will the lack of story nuance or the lack of voice acting other than gruff man mean Doom will become repetitive and unengaging.

Doom does look good, and runs well

Upon starting the campaign for Doom, you get a very quick introduction, much like in the Doom of old.

You never know when you might need the shells you have saved.

No longer do you always get the massive pop in issues of Rage when turning quickly, and thank a cyberdemon for that because boy do you move fast.

This is the only way to gain health, without hunting for a health pack, of course.

While the open multiplayer was hit or miss for most players, now that the new Doom has been released, reviews have been praising the campaign mode of developer id Software's reboot.

The game manages to walk the tightrope of staying loyal to the classic originals, while still bringing something new to the table and incorporating modern FPS mechanics.

One such detail is a new difficultly level called Ultra Nightmare, a new spin on the originals' most challenging level, Nightmare which the new Doom still has .

Doom has been out for less than a week now, and one player has already beaten it on this difficulty.

2016 appears to be the year to honor the influential FPS games from developer Id Software.

First we got a brand new Doom that actually lives up to the legacy of the originals, and this last week saw the 20th anniversary of the first Quake.

In an unexpected surprise celebrating the latter, a brand new episode for Quake was released — for free — by MachineGames, the developer behind the recent Wolfenstein titles The New Order and The Old Blood.

Fortunately for players, the classic game is only $2.50 on Steam right now as part of its big summer sale if you already own the game, you can just import it into your Steam library for free .

Once the game is installed, just download the new episode available as a RAR file.

As Polygon writes, another option after extracting the file into the Quake directory, is to right-click on Quake game in Steam, choose "properties," and on "set launch options" just type "-game dopa."

The epic battle between Facebook and ZeniMax Media is finally at an end, it looks like.

Starting all the way back in 2014, the dispute centred around the Oculus Rift VR system.

ZeniMax says it used their trade secrets, because employees who worked at Id Software (owned by ZeniMax) brought research and code developed at Id with them to Oculus, which then became part of the Rift.

Facebook and Oculus unsurprisingly disagreed, and the battle has raged on for years.

It was the first time Zuckerberg had testified in court, although obviously here in 2018 we're considerably more used to him being asked to take the stand.

ZeniMax originally won $500m, then asked the court to halt Oculus sales completely, which Facebook appealed.

Tim Willits, the longtime studio director at id Software, announced in a tweet that he will leave the company after the company’s upcoming QuakeCon fan event.

QuakeCon runs from July 25 to July 28 in Dallas, and it will bring to a close Willits’ 24 years with id Software, which for many years was based in Mesquite, Texas, and is now in Richardson, Texas.

And it means that Willits is leaving at a time that he previously called “the golden age of id.”

After 24 years, I’ve decided to leave id Software after QuakeCon.

QuakeCon has been an unbelievable part of my journey and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Gaylord Texan.

A couple of cacodemons in Doom Bethesda

Ultra Nightmare is the toughest difficulty level in id Software's Doom revival, and less than a week since the game launched on 13 May, one player has already conquered it.

It's a feat even the developers weren't able to manage during the game's development, and to make it even more impressive, the player did it without dying once.

Developer id Software's Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin revealed to IGN back in April that even those who made the game have been unable to beat Ultra Nightmare – a new difficulty mode tougher than the series' famed Nightmare difficulty.

It's the hardest of five difficulties in the game – which start with a super-easy "I'm Too Young To Die" mode.

Doom is the first game in the series in 12 years and has been heralded as a return to form for the series.

Our own reviewer enjoyed it more than the classic original, and heralded it as "the most finely crafted, technically impressive pure shooter in over a decade".

While developer id Software rolled out its newest update 6.66 for its Doom reboot, the series co-creator and veteran designer John Romero has revealed an interesting tidbit about the original 1993 game.

The informal poll saw 40% of fans requesting the designer to reveal some trivia about Doom, followed by Quake (23%), Commander Keen (21%) and Wolfenstein 3D (16%).

In a blog post on Wednesday (19 July), Romero decided to reveal the identity of Doomguy, the helmet-wearing protagonist on the original game's iconic box cover.

As it turns out, Romero said he was the model for the original Doomguy.

"Don Punchatz, the illustrator who created the DOOM logo and the famous front box cover art came over to id in mid-1993 with a male body model", Romero wrote.

"The body model took his shirt off and started posing with our plasma gun toy.

Quake Champions is shaping up to be one of the rare free-to-play games that will be impartial to users who don't spend money.

Quake Champions seeks to revive interest in the first-person arena shooter genre that was all the rage at the turn of the millennium, but id Software is taking a decidedly modern approach in terms of payment structure.

Speaking with Polygon, creative director Tim Willits said the game will be free-to-play, but users will only have one character completely unlocked without forking over some cash.

Playable characters in Quake Champions are unsurprisingly called Champions, and from the get-go you’ll play as Ranger.

To have unlimited access to the whole cast of characters, you’ll have to buy the Champion Pack.

This shouldn’t be construed as micro-transactions, though, as the Champions Pack is a one-time purchase.
