French startup Convargo is a marketplace for shippers and carriers so that you can find a truck and send goods across France more efficiently.

The startup just raised a $19 million Series A round led by Inventure Partners and Earlybird.

Tony Fadell, Patrick Sayer and Oskar Hartmann, Roger Crook, Clément Benoit and Romain Afflelou are also participating in today’s round.

As always, marketplace startups work particularly well for fragmented industries.

And this one is perfect as many carriers own less than 10 trucks, pricing varies greatly and there has been little innovation for the past decades.

“Today, we have more than 2,000 partners, representing more than 120,000 trucks,” co-founder and CEO Maxime Legardez told me.

More than any other race, it's a crucible in which new technology is forged, technology that's directly relevant to the cars you or I drive on the road.

The Toyotas were able to run for 14 laps between fuel stops—one more than either the Audis or Porsches, and the 5 stretched a lead over the 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid Neel Jani, Romain Dumas, and Marc Lieb and its sister TS050 Mike Conway, Stéphane Sarrazin, and Kamui Kobayashi until it all went tragically wrong halfway around the penultimate lap.

The second Toyota was classified second and Audi—which was in danger of having its worst result at Le Mans since it began competing there in 1999—finished 3rd 8, Oliver Jarvis, Lucas Di Grassi, and Loic Duval and 4th 7, Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fässler, and Benoit Tréluyer .

Ultimately, the 5 Toyota wasn't even classified, excluded from the results for completing its final lap in more than allowed six minutes.

Further down the field, Ford got the storybook result it had hoped for—kind of—winning the GTE-Pro class and beating Ferrari on the 50th anniversary of its first win at Le Mans.

The 68 Ford was subsequently hit with a 50-second time penalty for exceeding the maximum speed during a slow zone where track speed is limited due to an incident and another 20-second penalty for faulty wheel sensors.

A few years ago I had the great privilege of working with Joan Rivers.

Because Joan was famous for her "take-no-prisoners" interview style, I was concerned she might embarrass me on the interview, but was willing to risk it to get the attention.

She showed up face-lift positive, with the attitude of a 20 year old in love, grateful to be working, and demonstrated a whatever-it-takes work ethic.

This got me to thinking about branding.

Merriam-Webster defines branding as “the process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumer’s mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme.” But does branding always require advertising?

Does advertising always require you to spend money?

Like a number of her contemporaries or near-contemporaries—Julian Barnes and Renata Adler among them—Didion is ultimately challenging the writer’s empirical “I,” a subject that Susan Sontag tackled in an essay published in this magazine, in 1973:

Inevitably, disestablishing the “author” brings about a redefinition of “writing.” .

But instead of writing directly about the experience of writing or not writing, inventing or not inventing, Hnath has now found himself by parsing and filling in a story he didn’t write, Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House.”

“A Doll’s House, Part 2” (directed by Sam Gold, at the John Golden), Hnath’s invigorating ninety-minute, intermissionless work, is an irresponsible act—a kind of naughty imposition on a classic, which, in addition to investing Ibsen’s signature play with the humor that the nineteenth-century artist lacked, raises a number of questions, such as What constitutes an individual achievement in this age of the simulacrum, when everything owes something to something else?

The question of intimacy—and its connections to money, Christian morality, and gender roles, or, more specifically, how a woman should behave—excited his dramatic imagination and also made him a critic of the mores he grew up with.

Widely considered the father of modern realism, Ibsen wrote “A Doll’s House” in 1879, and it changed everything.

As 2017 draws to a close it seems we are reaching a paradoxical time where many are placing AI front and centre in their 2018 trends list whilst others are finding AI to be over-hyped.

The sad reality is that many companies are trying to make their newest product sound cutting edge by using the term artificial intelligence to mean just about anything a computer can do, take for example this child’s toy for Christmas.

Newspapers and magazines love to put out sensationalist stories on AI, buoyed by futuristic movies from the likes of Tom Cruise and Will Smith, meaning the term is thrown around casually across the world.

Marvin Minsky, one of the bigger names in the AI field (he co-founded MIT’s AI lab), has called “intelligence” a “suitcase word,” meaning you can stuff anything in there.

In other words, it’s too broad and it doesn’t lend itself to precise definition.

The lack of precision around the term has become part of the issue.

Mammoth Media has raised a $13 million Series A funding to create what it calls “entertainment experiences for the mobile-first generation.”

Mammoth isn’t not the first startup to pitch itself as reinventing entertainment for smartphones, but for the most part, that message has come from gaming companies.

Co-founder and CEO Benoit Vatere said he wanted to take the mobile-centric approach beyond gaming and social media.

Rather than “mixing social and media,” Vatere said the focus at Mammoth is “content and content alone.” That doesn’t mean excluding social entirely.

For example, Mammoth made the Wishbone app, where users can vote on things “Who’s cuter?”, but Vatere said Wishbone is more like America’s Funniest Home Videos than it is a social networking app — the focus is on creating shareable content, not on talking to your friends.

Mammoth also created Yarn, one of the apps delivering fiction in a text message format.

With the rise in popularity in digital content in recent years, the demand for stock images has increased at a commensurate rate.

And while there are now plenty of websites that provide a wide variety of stock images for just about every need (with more popping up all the time), few companies have stepped forward to change the way we source stock images.

However, that’s about to change, as Draagu, a Barcelona, Spain-based startup that is democratizing the stock image industry by allowing users to sell any (even unpublished) smartphone image.

That means that just about anyone can become image providers - whether they are professional photographers or not.

Draagu works like this: users download the smartphone app and receive alerts when one of their pictures matches a client’s search.

Users then have the opportunity to submit the picture that best matches the client’s needs, and if their image is picked, the user receives payment for their picture.

Joan Costa - CSIC

Researchers in Spain have created the world s first child exoskeleton which will enable children suffering from spinal muscular atrophy to walk, in some cases for the first time.

Our model includes intelligent joints which alter the brace s rigidity automatically and adapt to the symptoms of each individual child at whenever required, explains Elena Garcia, from the Automatics and Robotics Centre, a CSIC/Politechnic University of Madrid.

Type 2 is usually diagnosed between 7-18 months of life and children who show these symptoms are never able to walk thus leading to a serious decline in their health.

As a result their life expectancy is seriously affected by the lack of mobility meaning that any respiratory infection can become critical to any child over two.

By using this exoskeleton, Garcia and her team hope to avoid the onset of these symptoms which normally would have been unavoidable due to the child being unable to stand upright or walk.

Joan Costa - CSIC

Exoskeletons already exist for adults by either helping them walk or through allowing them to perform tasks that require near-superhuman strength.
