As Hurricane Dorian edges closer to Florida’s eastern coast, a 120-strong team of NASA personnel will ride out the storm at Kennedy Space Center, where they will monitor any damage to key launch infrastructure.

“With Hurricane Dorian forecast to bring hurricane conditions to the Kennedy Space Center in just a few hours, 120 members of the 'Ride Out Team' reported to the Launch Control Center to monitor and mitigate possible damage to spaceflight hardware,” NASA tweeted late Monday.

The space agency then tweeted an image of an industrial hygienist prepared to ride out the hurricane in Kennedy’s Launch Control Center.

“Once its [sic] safe to go out, this industrial hygienist and her team immediately do a post storm hazard analysis at KSC,” NASA explained.

Service members from the 45th Space Wing from nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station also arrived at Kennedy’s Launch Control Center to shelter from the hurricane.

Hurricane Irma was an extremely powerful storm, and even though it weakened significantly as it made its way towards landfall in Florida, the hurricane still caused an incredible amount of damage.

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, situated on Florida’s east coast, escaped the worst that the storm had to offer, but didn’t make it out unscathed.

In a blog post on NASA’s official site, the agency explains that the space center sustained “a variety of damage.” The facility is currently without water, which is obviously a pretty big deal for a destination that also hosts visitors and tourists.

“Center Director Bob Cabana joined the center’s Damage Assessment and Recovery Team for a survey of the spaceport Tuesday,” NASA says.

“A damage assessment report will be compiled over the next several weeks after a full inspection of the center has been conducted.

The Kennedy Space Center will remain closed Wednesday, Sept. 13, as the DART continues its efforts to assess and mitigate any issues it finds in order to open and fully resume operations at the Kennedy Space Center.”

As Hurricane Dorian heads toward Florida, The Kennedy Space Center is preparing for what could be a Category 3 storm.

In a tweet Wednesday, NASA posted video explaining how it was going to use a crawler transporter to pick up and take its mobile launcher inside the Vehicle Assembly Building as a "precautionary move."

The video explained that the crawler transporter is the vehicle that moves spacecraft around the launch complex.

Meanwhile, the mobile launcher is about 400-feet tall, making it the kind of structure you might want to move out of the way of a hurricane.

It's needed to "assemble, process and launch NASA's powerful space launch rocket and Orion spacecraft."

NASA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The first manned ‘mission’ to Mars is leaving sooner than you thought.

Officials at Florida’s NASA Kennedy Space Center are hoping new educational programs simulating a landing on Mars and running a space base there give the American public the most authentic experience yet as to what life could be like for astronauts on the red planet.

“People are captivated by the idea of Mars and we wanted to be able to give most people who would never have the chance of going there the most immersive experience,” Dee Maynard, education programs manager at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Titusville, told Fox News.

The redesigned Astronaut Training Experience (ATX) and new Mars Base 1 program will have limited availability starting Monday before a grand opening in mid-January, according to spokesperson Rebecca Shireman.

“This generation that is coming through, they are the ones that are the right age to be living and working in Mars,” Maynard said.

“We are trying to help them catch the Mars bug.”

You make a compelling argument—sign us up!

True, there will be obstacles: For one, the Martian corps that these recruitment posters from Kennedy Space Center are attempting to enlist us in does not exist.

Also, as of yet, no human has ever stepped foot on the surface of the red planet, much less worked some kind of shadowy night-watch position, that rather terrifyingly appears to require the constant use of a space harpoon.

The can-do spirit of these WWI- and WWII-influenced posters has already inspired us.

We will be teachers, and welders, and farmers, and satellite technicians, and guards against the Martian night-octopuses that presumably overrun its lunar plains.
