The Pixel, submitted to the 2016 Dyson Awards by French designer Antoine Devictor, is the transformer of light fixtures.

Pixels are essentially magnetic cubes that can be arranged in a wide variety of formations, allowing the user to customize the amount of light they want in a particular area.

Equipped with an intercom and a wireless camera, The Kuna lets you see when visitors approach your door and allows you to interact with them through an accompanying mobile app.

Kuna, which raised more than $225,000 on Indiegogo last year, also plans to work with electronic door lock companies, so that you can unlock your door from the couch.

The fixture is designed to replace your current wall-mounted lights and can be installed in about 15 minutes.

Once connected to your home s Wi-Fi, the device will send you alerts every time someone approaches your door.

Light announced that it has secured $30 million in new funding to build a device that has the power of a digital single-lens reflex DSLR camera and still easily fits into your pocket.

This round was led by GV and will be used to expand Light s supply chain and capacity, as well as to grow its team.

The latest investment is being called an opportunistic endeavor, as the company didn t necessarily need the funds.Along with today s news, Light shared that it has made modifications to a product designed to truly rival a DSLR camera.

The zoom range for all presale orders will be greater than was previously advertised — the device now supports wider zoom, and the internal storage capacity has been enhanced, moving from 128GB to 256GB.Founded in 2013 by CEO Dave Grannan and Rajiv Laroia, Light wants to make it possible for people to take professional photos without needing to lug around expensive equipment.

Grannan shared with VentureBeat that while humbled and flattered by the overwhelming response from consumers, the company will have about two months of production just to fulfill all the presale orders.

Once this is done, Light will be able to resume taking orders. With the additional $30 million coming in, Light will be able to expand supply chain and capacity.

This new lightbulb will light up your life, and in more ways than one.

In addition to providing the luminosity that one would expect from a light source, the PowerBulb from Mega Tiny Corp doubles as a dual USB charger, harnessing the power of the lightbulb to charge your mobile device or tablet.

All you have to do is screw the PowerBulb into a lamp, turn it on, and start charging your devices with a USB cable.

Because you shouldn t have to spend your days searching for a socket.

Newly launched on Kickstarter, the PowerBulb promises to show you the light in situations where you just need to get a quick charge.

We saw an obvious problem that almost everyone faces — how to get easily accessible charging ports anywhere in our home without a big mess of cables and the hassle of locating an outlet that s never in a convenient place, said Jeff Wilcox, head of product development at Mega Tiny Corp. Our bright idea was tapping into the light bulb!

In a paper published today in Nature's NPJ Quantum Information, Omar Magaña-Loaiza, assistant professor in the Louisiana State University (LSU) Department of Physics & Astronomy, and his team of researchers describe a noteworthy step forward in the quantum manipulation and control of light, which has far-reaching quantum technology applications in imaging, simulation, metrology, computation, communication, and cryptography, among other areas.

The paper, titled "Multiphoton quantum-state engineering using conditional measurements," includes co-authors from the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colo., institutes and universities in Mexico and Germany, as well as Chenglong You, an LSU postdoctoral researcher and member of Dr. Magaña-Loaiza's experimental quantum photonics group.

"Then, we can make more precise measurements.

Physicists all over the world are racing to develop techniques to preserve light's quantum properties at large enough scales for practical purposes.

While physicists can so far control the quantum properties of single photons and pairs of photons, leading to powerful applications through entanglement and "heralding" (wherein knowledge of one photon gives relatively certain knowledge about another, not-yet-detected photon), Magaña-Loaiza's team successfully demonstrated a method to generate groups of photons with these same powerful properties--known as multiphoton states.

By subtracting out some photons, Magaña-Loaiza said, "We can reshape the form of the wavepacket and artificially increase the number of photons in it."

How do you rank them and decide which one is the actual best iPhone ever, especially when they don’t all go on sale at the same time?

They have practically the same dimensions (5.45 inches long x 2.65 inches wide at 0.29 inches thick for the iPhone 8; 6.24 inches long x 3.07 inches wide at 0.30 inches thick for the iPhone 8 Plus), same display size (4.7 inches diagonally for the iPhone 8; 5.5 inches for the iPhone 8 Plus), same button and port locations, and they both lack a headphone jack (very sorry to say).

Gone is the jet black matte finish, and gone is the lovely rose gold option, but Apple switched up its standard gold option to meet us somewhere in the middle.

It will make the same charging chime and flash the lightning bolt indicator, just as it does with a Lightning connector.

(Currently, the existing Qi pads can only charge one device at a time.)

Apple claims that its two performance cores are 25-percent faster than the iPhone 7’s A10 Fusion chip, while it’s four efficiency cores are 70-percent faster.

Most people understand the threats posed by various types of pollution, but the potential damage light pollution can have on our health and the ecosystem doesn’t always get a lot of attention.

Moving to outdoor LED lighting was supposed to help the problem, but it's made matters worse.

An international team of scientists used satellite-based sensors to determine if the Earth’s surface is getting darker or brighter at night and to find out if LEDs are saving energy.

What it found was that due to the lower energy costs associated with light-emitting diodes, many areas use the savings to buy even more LEDs—a practice the researchers call the “rebound effect.” This means the amount of outdoor lighting has been increasing over the last few years.

"We'll light something that we didn't light before, like a bicycle path through a park or a section of highway leading outside of town that in the past wasn't lit," said Christopher Kyba, the study’s lead author.

“The world has experienced widespread 'loss of the night,' with half of Europe and a quarter of North America experiencing substantially modified light-dark cycles," the researchers exlpained.

I don t know what 1,000 suns actually looks like in real life, but I would imagine it s probably something like lighting up this 20,000 watt light bulb to full, world-scorching power.

Photonicinduction tested this 20kW Halogen light bulb that s used for large scale film sets indoors — where it can flood out an entire room in white light—and outdoors — where it can pretty much turn night into day.

I m not even joking.

Do you chuck them in the trashcan without giving it a second thought?

But, that’s not necessarily the right way to dispose of light bulbs.

For instance, Home Depot has a recycling program, which accepts old incandescent holiday light strings.

Ikea also has a recycling program, which accepts “used regular light bulbs.”

How to dispose of CFL and fluorescent light bulbs

Unlike incandescent bulbs, CFL bulbs (or Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs) contain a small amount of mercury.

Oscar knows everything about the light.

“LED is not only about saving power, we recognize the value of the spectrum and spectrum effect on the biological qualities, antibacterial applications.

It can heavily reduce the amount of chemicals needed for disinfection.

We can create an environment that acts as an antibacterial force field that degrades the bacteria.

When you don’t clean it, at some point it will impossible to write on it.”

$250 is a lot of green to drop on any lighting fixture, indoors or out.

But if you really want to light up your front porch or prison yard , the Maximus Smart Motion Security Light should do the trick.

Controllable via Amazon s Alexa digital assistant or via the Kuna app available for Android and iOS devices, Maximus Smart Motion Security Light builds on the success of the company s Smart Security Light line.

The somewhat insectile outdoor fixture is equipped with an integrated 1080p video camera that can broadcast live footage directly to your smartphone.

And its powerful 2400-lumen floodlight is unlikely to leave any shadows for miscreants to hide in that s more than twice as bright as the Netatmo Presence security camera/floodlight we reviewed in November 2016 .

Through the use of the Kuna app, which you can read about in one of our earlier reviews, you ll not only be able to view the Smart Motion Security Light s video feed, but also hear and speak with individuals standing close to the fixture.

Commercially available reflectors usually have a highly reflective, matte white surface that gives even, neutral illumination.

For example, gold reflectors provide attractive, warm skin tones in portrait shots, while metallic silver foil finishes produce a bright, sparkling light.

Reflectors like these are particularly handy to use because they fold up to fit into a small carry pouch – though there's a bit of a knack to twisting them in the right way!

Alternatively, you can make your own reflector – you just need two sheets of A3-size white foam board, available from most stationery stores.

You then tape these together with masking tape.

You can also use a sheet, some white paper or any other reflective surface in place of a proper reflector.

It s called the Schlieren effect and it means that you can see stuff that s invisible to the human eye, like changes in air density.

So when you turn on a hair dryer, you can see the blast of air it shoots out.

When you open a can of Coke, you can see what s escaping into the air.

When you rub your hands, you can see the heat surrounding them.

Air is typically invisible to us sometimes we can see the blurry heat on the road, for example , but it s a constantly moving thing.

Brusspup created a simple set-up—a camera with a razor blade in front of it, next to a light source pointing at a concave mirror so it bounces light back to the camera—to make it visible.

Indeed, lens makers go to great pains to develop coatings that reduce the effects of flare, and lens hoods are designed to prevent flare-inducing stray light from striking the front element.

But in this tutorial we're going to use lens flare to our advantage for a creative portrait.

Lens flare is caused by light bouncing around in the lens barrel as it is reflected off the various glass elements inside the lens.

It is most commonly seen on bright days when the sun is in the shot, where it manifests itself as bright, colourful rings that radiate from the light source, or, if the sun is just out of the frame it can make the entire shot look hazy, flooding the image with a soft, bright light that reduces contrast and leaves the shot looking washed out.

Although lens flare is usually considered undesirable, it can be used to enhance images with creative effects, either in an abstract and overpowering style for some unusual shots, or subtly to add a faint, soft, romantic glow to your portraits, ideal for spring and summer shoots.

To balance exposures when using such strong backlighting, try using a reflector to fill in some of the shadows and brighten up your subject, thus enabling you to capture an exposure that darkens brighter skies and keeps the cloud textures from blowing out.
